Hi guys, I was wondering about a bow I picked up.The bow is a Bear Polar,MX650,64" [email protected] anybody help with the year it was built,and would it be a shooter or a looker?Thanks Harry

Red glass?  Ibeam riser or solid maple?  It sounds like it could be in the '57-61 range.  Just let us know a little more about the bow.

I shoot my old Polars alot, so yeah, it's a shooter.  The old Kodiaks are faster, but I like the way the Polars carry and feel after the shot.

I think its a solid Maple riser ,with red brown glass, right handed,It has white tips but they are thin(like a single layer of white)leather handle and leather plate.unstrung it looks kinda longbowish. MX650,64",40#@26"  the only numbers on the riser.Thanks for your help.Harry

Harry, I often go to  www.fredbear-online.com  as was suggested to me here and find it super helpful. If you drill down on the site and go to the "bear archery bow identifier" section you can punch in the model of bow and you can look through the various years it was produced and compare them to your bow. It was helpful to me and I am glad it was suggested to me here. Give it a try. John

I don't know how many years they used the white tip overlays but the '58 has them. Like Jeremy, I enjoy shooting mine but I don't quite have the brace height figured out yet. If your bow is sound I don't think you would have any problems shooting it. I shoot all of my '58s on a regular basis, I do keep the arrow weight at 10 grains per pound or more though.

It's a '57 or a '58.  If it has a rounded sight window instead of a scalloped window, than it's definitely a '58.

Bob, they used the single white overlay on the Polar from '56 through '58.  Then went to red and white in '59.

It really depends on condition.  In decent shape I've been buying the early Polars for $40-60.  In excellent, near mint shape, I've been buying them for $100-125 shipped.  There's not a large market for the early Polars, which is why I have a rack full of 'em!
