I've been lurking around for awhile.  I've been deerhunting since I was 14 (I'm 39) and was kind of getting burned out on deerhunting from box stands and knowing what every deer in the woods looked like by having cameras. Remembering how much fun it used to be when it was simple, I tried a compound bow and it wasn't what I was looking for either.  It seems like they are built to use for a season or two and then they are considered outdated.
  I've always like the looks of recurves in old hunting books  but being new to traditional, I shied away from an older bow and bought a new Bear Grizzly in Nov. and I'm now hooked on traditional archery.
  Now my 8 year old daughter has a bow, and my 5 year old son has a bow(he's hooked more than me).  He can hit a milk jug at 10 yards! Now my wife's been shooting my bow and wanting to take it over so now I've been on the lookout for an older Bear bow to restore and tinker with .
I really enjoy this site.

Welcome Johnny,If you want to enjoy a good time with your family go to Compton.June 19-20& 21--Its all traditional..kids have a ball as well as adults.Go to (Compton traditional bow hunters) site there is a bunch of info on it.

 I was a Trad Gang member a long time before I stumbled onto History/ Collecting forum I really enjoy it and hope you do too. All I can say is be careful these old bows can be addicting.  :archer:          Scott

Welcome Johnny,

This is a good place to seek info for your interest for sure. And as Rick said if you can make it to Compton's Trad Shoot that's the place to be coming up. You can camp right there and shoot for three days.Its about traditional family! I'll be as one of the collectors set up with American Broadhead Collectors Club. I camp all week, its a nice get away next to the river.

Welcome Johnny.  Don't be shy...now that you have gone traditional and signed up with TradGang, you are now one of us.  Jump in.

Nobody knows it all, but collectively here we know a lot.  Ask questions, report things you learn here.  You would be surprised how much us old timers learn from new guys that research things.

Don't have concerns obout buying old recurves.  In my opinion the best recurves were from the '60's...the Golden Decade of Traditional Archery.

Welcome Johnny, the knowledge here is astounding! I stumbled into this forum about a year ago looking for a '58 Bear to commemorate my 50th. year and now I have 10 and am still looking!

Welcome Johnny, If you thirst for archery history and knowledge about old bows and other archery tackle, you've bellied up to the correct bar.

Don, Wade, Ron, Ken, Bjorn, Jack, Steve, Rich, Cam, Bill, John, Chuck, Mike and others have been at this gig a long time and have paid attention along the way.  More importantly they are willing to share with budding collectors and interested historians.  Their "collective" knowledge is amazing.  They make this forum  great.

Ask lots of questions, research old posts, listen and contribute when you can.

  I've always had to take a bowhunters approach to hunting due to where I hunt .  I only have 15 acres to hunt on and its mostly cedar thickets with limited clearings, but all the land around mine is thousands of acres of woods so there's plenty of deer, just not alot of ground for me to cover.  So, being on 15 acres, I've never killed a deer over 30 yards even with a rifle. A friend of mine who bowhunts was telling me, your killing deer at 7 yards with a rifle, you might as well take up bowhunting, much more enjoyable."
  I really like the looks of old Bear bows with the wood grain finish about like the stock of an old gun...like that 62 Kodiak I saw posted below...but then I like the old green ones too!
