What year did Earl Hoyt start in St. Louis,MO?
« on: June 27, 2009, 06:55:00 PM »
The reason I am asking is because I have a Hoyt catalog which was my Dad's and it is issue Number 8. The bow and prices are just unbelievable. POC shafts matched dozen probably ACME as well $3.00 a dozen, Forgewoods $12.00 a dozen, Duco cement 30 cents ect. Thanks for replies Flint   :)

I had the opportunity to visit with Earl Hoyt Jr. in the mid 60's to see his facility. It was a lot of fun. Great gentlemen and very talented. He made great target bows that set many records and won the first two Golds in the Olympics. I have several, and one of his Hoyt Pro Medalist hunters models.

"He built his first bow at age fourteen from a Bow Scout Manual, and started making bows in 1938 after reading Sylvan Archer Magazine and Hunting with the Bow and Arrow by Dr. Saxton Pope. He was also known as Eddie Lake in St. Louis, Mo. where he was an orchestra/band leader".  From Traditional Bowyers Encyclopedia by Dan Bertalan.  I would recommend this book, it covers about 30 different bowyers. First print in 1989 and later updated & rev. in 2007.

Thanks for the history lesson Hud.

Being a native Missourian, I should know that stuff, but I don't.

I met Earl Hoyt and watched him shoot in the "Show Me Games" on several occasions.  Nice guy.
