4 arrow Quiver screw specs please
« on: August 25, 2009, 02:24:00 PM »
So I finally am going to get a 4 arrow, leather top, screw on Bear quiver for my bows. (thanks to 450 Marlin) I have refinished 2 Grizzlys (1959 and 1960) and one Alaskan (1959) and none of them have the quiver insert. I plan on adding a quiver insert to all. I searched the net looking for brass inserts and might have found some close enough for me to the originals. Here is a link to one supplier.

  http://yardleyproducts.thomasnet.com/viewitems/sharp-sert-flanged/sharp-sert-insert-us-threads?&forward=1

They are not of the threaded type but rather the push in type. If I go with this type (still looking for the threaded with a flange) I would drill a tad smaller than the insert for a tight fit and glue it in. Just hope the riser won’t split... I’ll test my technique on something else than a bow before attempting the real deal.

Trying to think logically here, I should start with finding the screws first and then find the appropriate inserts.

So here is my question. Does anybody know the original screws specifications?
Thread count, length, width of the head, type of metal, ect...

Here is a pic I stole off BowDoc’s 101 thread showing the original Insert and screw.

Thanks a bunch guys

Simon

They are far from being virgins Jim. All 3 of them were in very poor condition at one time. Replaced tip overlays and leather grips, the grizs lost their original silkscreens in the restoration process, holes filled, huge gauge in the riser for the Alaskan, 3-River aftermarket repro coin on the 1959 Griz, deep scratches that still show on the glass, name it. All violated bows before I got them.

I don’t think I would ever drill or even refinish a well preserved vintage bow but in this case, I feel I would do no harm to their collector value in any way.

I bought these bows to use them. I was not feeling very comfortable using my other collectables in the woods.

Hello Simon- I'm an odd duck here. I believe the bow should suit you regardless, but I'm in a minority, You really should keep looking for a screw in bushing; if you drive a splined bushing into a hole a bit small you can easily crack the bow. Bowdoc or Wade Phillips can probably help you out but each are leaving shortly for extended hunts. Be patient and the proper bushings will show up. I'll look around and see if I have any dead soldiers that I can scavange as well. Hope to see you next year in La Tuque...Grant

I just got out the gauge and measured my screw-couldn't trust my memory.
It 1/4'x20. It's a real common insert, I have added them to several of my bows for like the Delta quivers etc. Fastenal would be one place to look.

I’ll be in La Tuque next year and hope I’ll get the chance to talk to you more than I did this year. I am going to look deeper in cyberspace for a Flanged Screw-in insert of the right specs. I might need to rely on some TGers for the original ones if I can’t find any. It’s just that there have been so many requests for these inserts right here on this forum that I imagine that they are getting really scarce.

Thanks for the specs. So 1/4 would be the width of the screw and X20 is the number of threads per inch, right?
What is the length of the screw, without the head, just the threaded part.
What is the width of the head.

Thanks again

Great!

I think I can start searching for the screws now. I’ll post my findings here.

Thanks everyone

Simon -

If you are going to remove the quiver every time you get into a blind or stand, you might find it easier to use a thumb screw of some type with a washer. 1/4-20 thumb screws are available at Menards. A 1/4-20 wing nut that is bottomed out on the screw head will also work, these are common parts found in nearly any hardware store. Have picked up bows with all sorts of odd ball 1/4-20 screws in the quiver bushings.

Have never found a newly purchased bushing that is identical to the original Bear brass quiver bushing. If you find a source for the originals, be sure to let us know. Have used other styles of 1/4 bushing for mounting removable legs on some display cases. But for Bear bows, I always use an original Bear bushing because they are smaller OD and accommodate the square wrench their entire length.

Thanks for the tips Wade. I will try the thumb screws out but I don’t plan on removing the quiver while hunting. Since I will only have one quiver, I will swap them from one bow to an other though.

Still no luck finding a threaded flanged 1/4 X 20 brass insert. The closest I got is this.

1/4 X 20, flanged, brass, push in type. It has a 1/2 inch wide flange ant it’s 1/2 inch deep :

Next is this. Made of steel, Installed with a hex drive wrench.

Similar insert, Zinc alloy. (go down 1/2 page for the «1/4-20 DIE CAST ZINC ALLOY FLANGED HEXDRIVE THREAD INSERTS FOR WOOD»

If I find a better match, I’ll be really happy to share the name of the supplier.
