Gave the old girl some new tips
« on: August 28, 2009, 08:05:00 PM »
A while back Bowdoc warned me about my endless string tearing through the original paper tips on my '59 Grizzly. Not being one to argue with experience, well, at least not in this case  :bigsmyl:  , I asked my friend Roman if he had some scraps of Phenolic.

Of course he did. I went to his place Wednesday afternoon and removed the old tips. They came off scaringly easy. After removing all evidence of the old tips, we glued on 4 layers, black, white, black, white. Using super glue , a very high quality, you don't have to wait long to shape.

I rough shaped them on his sander, then finished them at home this morning.

After sanding with 220, I sprayed on 3 light coats of Thunderbird epoxy. After a thorough drying, I went over them lightly with steel wool to blend them in. The new finish went about 6 inches up the limbs, but after the steel wool, you can bearly see a difference between the old finish and new. After it totally cures, I'll wax the whole bow and she'll be ready for Sept 27th!!

Sorry about the quality of the pics.
