Tung oil on limbs ... ?
« on: October 10, 2009, 04:26:00 PM »
I am refinishing my first Bear bow, a 1966 Kodiak ... pics to follow. I need some advice, will a tung oil application work on the fiber glass of the limbs? If not, what finish is recommended for the entire bow? Thanks for your help. I have used Helmsman's marine spar var in the past on other longbows I have built with good success but am open to new things.

Thanks,

Highlife

Go to search and type in bow restoration or restoration 101. This will give you a lot of information.

Bowdoc recommended Tru-oil to me to do touch up work on a Bear bow, which I have used and like the results.

Like Rick says, find the restoration 101 thread if you haven't seen it already-it is very good.

I have read that it needs to be fresh, not a bottle that has been opened for some time.

Birchwood & Casey gun stock tru oil is one of the better finishes for bows.No problems with it sticking to the glass. And heck if its good enough for a gun stock its gotta be good enough for a bow.bd

Ok ... great, thanks for the insight guys! Pics to follow for all to see.

I actually did read the restoration 101 post all the way through but it does not address what type of finish and specifically about the tung oil adhearing properties to the fiber glass limbs.
