Anyone know anything about an old bear back quiver
« on: October 12, 2009, 02:57:00 PM »
A gentleman was nice enough to give it to me. its light tan suede with a small zippered pocket on the front with the bear symbol. has a bck zipper to access the arrows and when you put arrows in the quiver it goes through whiskers much like a whisaker bisquit. has to leather straps like you could wear it like a backpack.

Bob - Sounds like you have a Bear Northwoods quiver.

It is Bear's only quiver that has all the characteristics you describe.

suede
small zippered pocket on the front
bear symbol
back zipper to access the arrows
put arrows in top through whiskers
leather straps like a backpack

The zippered pocket model was the last feature to be added and dates from mid 1940s into the 1950s.

Nels Grumley and Fred Bear both used earlier models of the Northwoods.

Floyd Eccleston used the Northwoods most of his life, even in his later years. At the time of his death in 1999, Floyd had over a dozen Northwoods in his shop.

Bob - Your description is like the quivers at upper right corner of this photograph...

John - Glad you like the Bear Leather Hunting Quivers. They are my favorites, (wonder why?). After that photograph was taken in March, I acquired the last major item that was missing then. Need to reorganize that wall and get an updated photograph.

Bear Leather Hunting Quivers were so cool from 1933 to 1971.

It is just a crying shame that Bear's quivers went to hell after 1971.

Bob - Glad to be able to help with the Northwoods identification.

As the other guys said, posting a photograph is the quickest way to get an accurate identification. Just happened that your very accurate description was detailed enough that only one Bear Quiver had all those characteristics.

Bob - That wall is truly a lifetime of collecting Bear Leather Hunting Quivers. I got my first Bear quiver in 1958, I've kept it these past 51 years and that quiver is in the photograph. I've been more than fortunate to have acquired all those quivers one at a time and all the Bear documentation to validate their legitimacy and date them. It has been great fun discovering all the information and searching for quivers for decades. All collectors are crazy...
