No Rasta farian bow but still cool
« on: October 14, 2009, 12:06:00 PM »
Didn't want to put this on the great thread about the Bob Morley bow but thought it was a pretty cool bow from around the same time.It was evidently given to another one of Fred's good hunting partners.I'm glad I didn't have to remove the leather grip to find out.The bow is a 1955 Kodiak.
Basil Hughes was I believe a Conservation officer from Michigan and hunted with Fred at Grousehaven. He is shown in some old photos at Grousehaven with Bill Boyer,Arthur Godfrey and Fred Bear.Just love this old history stuff.

John - Cool bow, great signature and wonderful inscription. Basil Hughes was one of Michigan's Pioneer bowman. He goes back in bowhunting long before the days of Arthur Godfrey at Grousehaven. If I can find Basil's 1933 arrow will take a photograph of it and post it here...

John, Thanks so much for sharing. Love the history as I am in a Fred Bear book reading frenzy right now.

Not to be too dumb about it but when Fred signed bows did he sign them in the year that is written on the bow?

In my VERY limited exposure I have only seen the "happy hunting" signatures. What else did Fred sign?

Thanks guys!

Just remembering a thread I read a while back.

They wanted to know if someone had their name on a bow you bought, would you sand it off and refinish the bow.

I guess they felt it was really second hand, if the name was there. Kinda like dating a gal that had her old boyfriends name tattooed on her b***.

It,s great that these old bows have the names of previous owners. Some great history.

Just think what a bow would be worth in the future with Rick Wakeman on it

John- Never being "too dumb".That's how we all learn.I've seen Fred sign other things on a few items.Had a B-riser that Fred signed "Good Hunting to a fellow bowhunter,Fred Bear" and also some photos signed "To my good friend,XXXXX.
I did once have a pair of bows signed by Fred with the very same inscription and dated 1959.One was a 1959 Kodiak that was like brand new but had a severely cracked upper limb.Same inscription in Fred's writing and in gold was on a same weight 1967 1/2 Super K and dated 1959.It appeared as though the gentleman broke the first bow Fred gave him and some time later had him sign the same thing on another bow. Both bows were in like new condition(except for the cracked limb) and appeared to have never been shot, and were both 60" and 50#.I imagine he usually dated them the same year they were signed. The 67 1/2 Super K was an exception.
Bjorn-That Bob Morley bow is really cool, especially the fact that if the leather hadn't been removed no one might have ever known it was his.Great stuff.
Wade- I would love to see your Basil Hughes arrow.I do have a couple of his signed hunting arrows but nothing as old as yours. One of mine appears to be from the 1950's.Someone out there has a 1970 Super K signed by Fred to Basil too.I remember seeing it when my bow was for sale.Wish I had bought it too but didn't.I remember it was signed in gold.

Thanks John, I can't get enough of the history of Fred. Love every bit of it.

From all I have read Fred seemed to be a true gentleman. Really seemed to understand how much it meant to the person on the other end to get something from him.

Just wish I could have met him and crossed paths at the museum in Grayling.

John,
Since you're such a nice guy I'm giving you this free pass to the Bear museum in Grayling signed by Mr. Bear himself.  It's unlimited so you can take your whole family.

John - This is the inscription of the Basil Hughes arrow that he killed his bull moose with in Canada in 1933. Broadhead on arrow is a 1925 O.A. Norlund Slip On... This arrow was in one of my arrow displays at Compton this year. You may have missed it with some much stuff to look at. I don't mean to torture you with anxiety, but I might put the arrow on the trading block in some kind of a deal for a Kodiak that I really wanted...

As I'm sure you know, this arrow was in Floyd's collection. Floyd and Basil were pretty tight and Floyd got most of his stuff.

If the arrow goes anywhere, it should go back to Michigan.

Wade- Wish I would have looked closer for the Basil Hughes arrow in your collection. After parting with my 100# Kodiak Deluxe and walking around with my new Nels Grumley arrow at Compton,I was both a little sad and a little giddy.
What Kodiak are you hoping to get?It must be pretty special if you don't already have one like it.This collecting stuff is crazy. Thanks for posting the picture.
John- I feel the same way as you do.I never got to meet Fred personally but have met and talked to many people that knew him or worked for him.Nothing but wonderful stories about him.He must have known he was quite a celebrity but always seemed to remain humble. What a great hero and example for all of us.

I mentioned a reference to Basil Hughes distinctive string silencer to Wade that I had read about in an old Archery magazine.I believe it was Tracy Stalker's Q&A section in a late 1950's or early 1960's issue.Perhaps Cliff(Liquid Amber) could help me out here,I can't seem to find it.It is a single silencer made of leather. When I got the bow I thought it was odd to only have one and thought maybe one had fallen off over the years but after reading about Basil's silencer in the old magazine I realized it was one he had made for the bow and it never had two.More evidence of it being his bow I guess even though the inscription verifies that pretty much.Wade asked me to show the silencer so here is a pic.I also thought I would add a couple of pics of one of Basil's arrows I have from around the same era I believe going by the Case head.
 Here's the string silencer:

Here's one of Basil's arrow with his name on it:

And here's one showing the broadhead on the arrow, painted red too!:

John - Neat Leather String Silencer. Don't know that I have ever seen that unique Single Leather Beauty  before.

Cool arrow. Always like those arrows painted down at the broadhead end. I'm certain that it was done for several purposes, not just to dress up the arrow...

Here is some bowfishing tackle that Basil Hughes made... The large wood and metal reel in the middle with his name on it, and the fish points. Also shown are two early wooden bowfishing reels by Fred Bear and one other that I have not found any documentation for. Can anyone identify the wood reel with the two holes at the base?

John, nice arrow and cool silencer.

Wade, I wonder if the point end of the arrow was painted in such a way as the Basil arrow as it was used as a point of reference when "aiming?"

Might have made it a little easier to see.
