Damon Howatt Bows (pic)
« on: October 20, 2009, 05:55:00 AM »
Put this one on the Pow Wow but figured I might as well put it on here as well for you guys that don't get over there that often. I've got to get around to re-finishing the one on top. The ones with the (?) dates I'm not positive on but I dont believe they used brazilian rosewood in the 80's. Maybe someone could straighten me out here.

It's now 6 am and time to take the Monterey for a walk in the woods.

Top to bottom:

1. 1980 Hunter 48#@28"- first new bow I ever bought. Shot my first couple of bow kill deer with this bow so It's a bit special. I'll probably do a refinish job on it here soon.
2. 1998 Hunter 50#@28"
3. 1995 Purpleheart Hunter 50#@28" - My newest. Thanks Cameron
4. 1978(?) Monterey 49#@28" This one will go to the woods with me the next couple of weeks.
5. 1974(?) Super Diablo 45#@28"
6. 1971(?) Coronado 45#@28" with green Gordon glass.
7. 1962 Diablo 50#@28" white glass
8. 1974(?) Diablo 45#@28"
9. 1984 Hi Speed 45#@28"

Dave - Beautiful collection of Howatt bows. We don't often see such a nicely displayed rack of bows by the same manufacturer. It is great to see guys specializing in one maker's bows. Howatt is certainly one of the better known bows and one of the longer lived companies.

My personal favorite Damon Howatt (1904-1965) bows are the two in the bottom of the photograph. Both are 1940s sinew backed static tip self yew. The other bows in the photograph were made by other well known Northwest bowyers, during the same era, and all are self yew.

It is always interesting to see the evolution and progress of one company's bows over the decades...

What a beautiful collection of Howatts, and very nicely displayed!  I'm fortunate enough to own two, and love 'em both.  Great bows.

Wade, what a great display of Yew self bows. DH Static tip no less. Man, you just don't see those every day. Awesome. I've some some of your other posted pics of old archery equipment. You have some collection. I've got some other bows from Bear, Pearson, and Lee that I'll post a pic of. I just really like the Howatts and decided if I buy older bows now, I might as well stay with the DH line.

Doc, I still have your partners Red Wing Hunter!

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Dave

Wow, Great looking rack and the bows are beautiful Dave.

I see you have some great Bear bows as well.

Out of all of them, which is your "go to" bow?

Careful now Dave, you're gonna get someone's panties all twisted up with a statement like that.     ;)

"Better" is in the eyes of the "bowholder"

Those Vintage Works are great looking bows, no doubt.  I'm sure they are outstanding shooters as well.

I did notice those feather  rests.  Glad you like them.

Good Luck with the Monterey.

Very nice,,, I bought a Howatt at a antique store for 60 bucks and came with a dozen stemmler arrows.. I just happen to be going to Moses Lake archery shoot. And was lucky to have Gale, Dan, Don Jewitt, Larry Hatfield, Shawn, and Ryan Martin. All signed the bow on riser...Mr Martin said its the only Bow all of them signed.. Also asked if i was to part with it, To please give Martin Archery first dibs.. Very nice bow Balboa45@28.  Very nice shooting bow..Signatures were just a bonus.. Martin has put out a great bow for many years...as we see the nice racks on this page... Have not a clue how to post pics..  Very nice racks guys and thanks for the pics..Great shooting bows..Thanks and take care guys.....CWarberg

I would think it's "priceless", at least for now.

I spent a few hours at NWA in Des Moines, when growing up in Bellevue and Mercer Island. So it seems its a small world. Love those Howatt bows and have been looking myself.
