59 AND 60 GRIZZLY?

Do you mean the 60 tips were not layered? Just bought a "59" and was wondering this also. thanks

The '59 and '60 tips look the same, different materials were used. Also the riser on most '59s have two layers of walnut with the maple, whereas, most of the '60s have just one.

When I get my laptop back from the shop, I'll post some pics of what I mean.

Here is an oddball. On the left is a '59, small grip, paper micarta tips, on the right is a '60, or at least transition '59/'60, bigger beefyer riser and grip, with glass tips.
Generaly the '60 does not have the two dark "Chevrons" as the '59 has.

Here you can see the riser on the right is heavier, the '60.

That's a beauty Jim, did you do the refinish?

Yes.The bow was in pretty good shape but had a few dings.I was able to get them all out with less trouble than I thought.There was a series of dents right below the coin and I was able to raise that with steam.

The bow had one stress crack that disappeared when I filled.I was able to use keep the handle leather attached and just stained it.It still has the original silk screens and also the factory quiver bushing.

I hadn't shot one of these since I was a kid in the '60's.It sure is a fun one to shoot.

 You did a great job on that 59! I picked one up a few weeks ago in good shape and need to do something similar to what you have done with yours. Outstanding!

JIM NICE JOB! WHAT DID YOU FILL THE STRESS CRACK WITH LT 420? AND WHAT DID YOU USE  FOR A FINSH? IT LOOKS SATIN. THANK YOU BILL

Yes,I used LT 420.I used Helmsman satin urethane.Not shiny like original but I intend to rub that last coat down and it will have a little more sheen than now.I just got in too big a hurry to string and shoot it and hadn't got around to that yet.

It is a Min Wax product,indoor/outdoor spar urethane,spray.It also comes in gloss.

I should also say that my shop is about 65 degrees and I found that the recommended recoat time of 1 1/2 hrs was way too close together.I apply about six coats altogether and if you pile them on too soon,it takes forever to dry.I did better by waiting 12-24 hours between coats at that temperature.

To get a really slick finish,after about the 4th coat,very lightly sand with 1000 grit wet or dry,remove dust and spray.After the last coat is on,let it cure for 4-7 days,then sand lightly with 2000 grit.Follow that up with a fine rubbing compound like FFF or FFFF which will blend everything together and the finish will have a very silky feel.

You can kind of tell when it is cured or not by the smell.Once it is fully cured it should have little or no smell.You don't want to do that final rubdown too early.
