LB Question?
« on: December 09, 2007, 11:16:00 AM »
After looking at peoples pictures and reading stories about wilderness hunts and horsepacking my daughter said "Dad, I want to go hunting".
"OK Sweetheart, I'll see about getting you a bow this next year. Would you like one like this or this (before I sold my compound and went 'Trad-only')"
"I like the one with only one string."  (  :D  )
"OK, we'll see what happens for your birthday and christmas."
"Hey dad, can I have a horse too?"
"One thing at a time dear!"
Anyway, I have purchased her a long bow and have a couple of questions.  First, the bow is 55", so what length string will I need. Second there is no riser to speak of, so is there anthing I can add to create an arrow rest.  I think the arrow across her hand will not work for her.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Shane

I think the standard on strings for longbows is 3" shorter than the nock to nock length (that is what I use as a starting point when I make one).

This is an idea that John Strunk showed me.  It uses a golf tee to make the rest.  Not as well finished as his are, but it works.  I have also used a wedge of thick leather under the handle wrap to make a shelf.

Leather and super glue shelf works great and is easy to do yourself.I believe there's a build along for it here somewhere.

Basically you cut sections of leather to the shape of your choice, making them continously smaller until you get to the desired thickness, saturating each with super glue. When finished, you can sand to final shape and it polishes up to look beautiful, almost wood-like.

Ferret\\'s Floppy Rest  is really easy to make and it works great.
