"Wing" Slimline "pro vantage
« on: March 21, 2010, 02:02:00 PM »
Hey guys, I wonder who can give me some info on a bow I recently purchased. It is a 62", 43# Wing "slimline pro vantage" recurve. The bow is marked with the traditional "wing" sticker, but it was actually made when Wing was owned by the "Head" ski company. I was told by a bow making friend of mine that Head only owned them for 1 year, but he did not know what year that was. The bow itself has a strong resemblance to a bear 67 1/2 super kodiak...it has a deep olive/black stained maple riser with cocobolo and maple accent line running vertically through it. It has black limbs with stabalizer holes above and below the handle section.Any guesses on the year??? It's a beautiful bow...thanks...john

1967 or 68. Handle is made from black micarta, not stained maple. Those inserts are for the Wing quiver, not a stabilizer. Reason it has a strong resemblance to the Super Kodiak is the Vantage Pro was designed by Bill Stewart, who also designed the Super Kodiak.

Kelly, thanks for the info on my bow.....very helpful.I love that bow...it's graceful and an excellent shooter!! I'm also a super kodiak fan, so this bow appealed to me. I've been looking for a 67 1/2 SK....maybe I'll quit looking and just stick to this one. Thanks again...john

I have one of the black micarta slimline bows. I also had a stained maple riser once. I'm guessing the stained maple ones were later models.

Yes, the stained maple ones were all AMF. Should have been a dark green stain?

Kelly, I believe it might have been a green and a maroon two tone riser. I had it about 10 years ago. It was a 70# lefty, a little stout for me.

Forgot about the two-tone. Currently have a 52" with green/maroon. Had a 62" with green/black.

Hope this ends up in the right spot. I've got a wing thunderbird 46# @ 28 62" with the black phelonic riser and the same Wing/Head mark. I thought it was a super K when I first saw it. 2 holes for sights but other than that would call it 95 %. Paid 150.00. Too much ? what do you think? Can't find alot of info on the wings but its a great bow!

Chris, I would think $150 was a good deal. They are somewhat scarce in phenolic.

Pretty much all Wing Thunderbirds were made with phenolic/micarta in the handle. Only when AMF decided to change the design were there some made with green colored maple.

A Wing Thunderbird doesn't resemble a Bear Super K in any fashion. $150 is a very good deal.
