First Longbow Suggestions?
« on: December 09, 2007, 03:54:00 PM »
I am looking to buy a longbow to get started with. I have shot compounds for about 5 years, and am ready to make a change.  I am looking for something inexpensive to start out with, preferably under $200.  My draw is 29"-30", measured at the local trad. archery shop.  I have looked at the bows from Desert Dog Archery, A.I.M. and some others.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the classifieds on this site. There is many great used bows in that price range. Most will come with a shot in string and built in mojo and you will probably make a new friend in the process.  Good luck, Bob

The one thing that I would suggest, it is to not over bow yourself.  It's really important, I have a good to Turkey Creek Longbow, you can get a Turkey Creek Longbow for about $475, I know it's more than what you mentioned, mine is a 43# @ 29 " and my Aero speed is 189 fps, so if you get the right bow even lower poundage, they are fast.  I can't speak for the other custom-made bows but the Turkey Creek Longbow is really a nice bow.  He is a sponsor on here.

I purchased my first bow for about $150 off the classifieds here, I used it for about three weeks, and sold it for the same price.

No, I just shoot right handed.  Too bad though, because an older friend of mine gave me an older Red Wing Hunter that is left handed.  Beautiful bow, from when it was still Wing Archery.

Buy used from the TradGang classified section. You should be able to get a pretty good R/D longbow in the $300 to $400 range. Finding something in the $200 range might be differcult, especially with your draw length, but given time it can be done.

I just bought a 60lb. pignut hickory longbow on **** for $85.  I have bows that cost many times that, mostly bamboo.  I understand  that pignut is the better hickory if it is done right.  This one does not have backing i may add tonkin cane to it, which would require retilling, which is not hard to do.  the bows I have done myself all turned out great.   The reason I say this is there are a lot of options out there, some good some not so good.  I do not know that much about pignut hickory , but this fellow seems to make them look pretty good for very little money.
