Just started collecting
« on: September 07, 2010, 11:14:00 PM »
I just started collecting older Bear bows. I started bowhunting in 1968 and really wanted a '67 Super Kodiak that was in a local sporting goods store. I couldn't afford it so I settled for a Kodiak Magnum.

I made up for lost time. I recently bought a '69 and '67 Super K and then I came across a collector selling his collection. I bought these Super Ks. I didn't know you could get a sight in the riser for a Super K. They are left to right - 2 '67s, 2 '68s and another '69.

I thought you would enjoy the picture. It is amazing that these Bear bows were mass produced. In the 60s they really knew how to build them back then.

Very nice start, you are lucky to hit the jackpot so quickly.  I like the Super K and have a 1969 in 60#, and a few older ones 55, 56, 57 and 58 models in 60". I like most of the Grayling bows.

Very nice!  I just refinished a 68 for myself and am in love with it.  Hope to someday end up with a stable like yours! I think those late 60 SK's are so cool

Thanks for the comments.

I have a holy grail bow I wouldn't part with for any money, but I think this year I will be hunting with a '67, 55# @ 28 Super Kodiak, with a cedar or douglas fir shaft and Bear broadheads.

When I shoot these Bears I get a deja vu feeling taking me back to 1968. It feels great and they shoot great. I am looking forward to hunting with the Bear SK on the ground this year, just like when I first started bow hunting.

I am also looking forward to picking up other vinatge Bear bows and accessaries.

Thanks
Gil

Do you put on tie dyed shirts and headband and listen to Jimmie Hendrix and Janis Joplin in the background when you are shooting?

You must be as old as I am. I was in a different crowd back then and that stuff just didn't go well with hunting. When most people were smoking dope, I was smoking arrows.

Nice collection Gil.  You sound like the kind of guys I hung around with back in '68.  I've got a 64" 1968 Super K that has really impressed me.  About the same manners as my 64" 1960 Kodiak.  I too can't believe those bows were massed produced and are still such nice performers.  I can't shoot the 60" bows because of my long draw and have some duplicates I'll be putting on here soon: 1957 60" @65lbs, 1962, 63 and 64 Kodiaks all at 50lb.

I was surprised that one of my '68 SKs is 64" also. It is 50# @ 28. I always thought they just came 60". I just started collecting them and got very lucky with picking up these bows at very good prices. So far I picked up the following bows.

'59 Kodiak all original 64" 45#

'62 Kodiak Magnum, beautiful Brazillian rosewood. 55# I had to include a picture of this one it is beautiful.

'69 HC 300
'65 HC 30

Super Ks - 3 67 1/2, 2 '68 and 2 '69

I am on my way. Here are a couple of pics of the '62 Kodiak Magnum.

Gil,

Gee Wiz! nothing like starting out from the top! Beautiful bows! I picked up another 62 Kodiak Magnum myself yesterday that has a quiver bushing in the handle. I can't remember seeing many other Magnums like that.

I just started collecting a few months ago myself. I'm still looking for a couple that you have already acquired. 67-68 Super Kodiaks. I have almost all the rest 53-72 with a few duplicates.

Great collection! My dream bows. I want an older SK but have to save my pennies to get one.
