Rosewood lighter with age
«

I'm in the process of taking the finish off of an old Damon Howatt with what I think is a rosewood riser. The wood was fairly light colored before I started, and I am amazed at how dark it is as bare wood. I assume that it will eventually lighten up again. Is that a long process?
Seems like some woods get lighter when sanded, others darker. Kind of cool to see them age gracefully over time.

oh yeah Joe that rosewood will really come back very dark once the old finish is removed.Yes it will lighten up again.I use a finish with a UV blocker that will prevent it from getting lighter colored again bd

Pictures Joe! You had a "yaller" finish, brother. So far, everything Bowdoc has done for me has retained its color beautifully. Of course, I won't be here to know if it holds up for forty years, LOL. GY

Grant, perhaps we need to rub a little of Bowdoc's magic wax into our skins and we may be around a little longer!!

I wish I had taken before pics. I'll have to get some showing it now. Up at the cabin for the weekend so.will have to wait a bit.
I've seen rosewood darken before but this one was really dramtic. Started out as a blond and is transforming into a dark maned beauty.

I love the dark rosewood, but really just think it's cool the way wood can change like that. I love the way osage ages as well, but that gets darker. Cocobolo ages well. A lot of my favorite woods are those that change. It's almost like they're still alive.

Finally home and got some "in progress" pictures. First shows what the bow looked like before starting, and then a couple in the middle of sanding. I wiped the sanded area down to try to show what it will look like when sprayed. The dark rosewood with white limbs is really going to be cool!

Wow, what a difference! I have a couple of Eastern Rosewood bows that are lighter than another Brazilian Rosewood and I just thought there was that much difference in the two types. Now it makes me wonder if refinishing the other two would bring out that rich darkness in them, if so I will.

Whip, I've refinished several older Howatts with brazilian rosewood. They were all lighter when I started and turned that beautiful deep dark reddish brown once done. The stripes in your riser look close to what my Monterey has. I know I don't have to tell you but I found out the hard way that the rosewood needs sealing before the finish goes on.
Waiting for more pics!!

ks if you remove the old finish I'am sure it will darken up the rosewood once new finish is applied.Older type finishes(and most new type finishes)did not have any UV blocker in them and turned yellow real soon after getting exposed to sun light.Rosewood is one of my all time favorite bow woods more so on older bows once restored it always comes back darker and looking way better then when you started.
hr I do not use any sealer on the rosewood but seal it with clear finish that will really bring out the depth and color bd

50 year old rosewood, if it has faded it must have been black to start with

Darker rosewood?
Lighter rosewood?
Blonde or brunette?
Your choice.
I like 'em both.

Tony thanks for bringing this one back up...it will be a good illustration for a fellow on the *********** who is wondering about the coloration of a 1963 Tamerlane with a rosewood riser
