Fiberglass repair ?
« on: November 13, 2010, 09:25:00 AM »
I aquired a bow with the glass on the backing damaged .It looks as if the glass is sepperating in a narrow strip about 10 inches long . is it possible to repair glass on the back ? for this  type of break to occur the vertical fiberglass strands would have to be broken or cut and my concern would be that it would not be able to withstand the flexing of the limbs without sepperating again. The seperation starts about 1/3 of the way down the bottom limb on the edge and goes about 10 inches. I'm pretty sure that this is a common occurance I've seen it before but have never known if it is repairable   :dunno:
I would like to hopefully use this bow sometime Its a '76? SK 50 pounder

If by 'back' you mean the side facing away from the shooter repairs are possible. On the compression side-facing the shooter, repairs are far more likely to fail. In any event Toad is right-we need a pic-and bowdoc too.

Is this the one that just sold on the big auction site a few days ago?  Blue stripe with white overlays.

Not the one from auction site .I'll try and get pics up as soon as I can .Gun deer season starts tomorrow around here . The problem with the glass is on the back (side facing target)lower limb. I learned" back of bow towards target ,face of the bow toward shooter" which kind of always confused me. I used to wonder why the back of the bow would not be "away"from target        OH Well!
I'll try and get pics up as soon as I get time and if photobucket is willing

Get some pics up as there is some real solid knowledge here. If you have ever been smacked in the head by a bow coming apart at full draw you'll know it's not fun...This happened with a very light horizantal crack on the back side of the bow. At that time it did not seem like much... I have alway's referred to the side facing you as the belly of the bow.
