longbow info please

I am thinking about purchasing/trading for a longbow in the coming months and would like some info/advice from you guys. I am looking for a short(60") r/d longbow that is cut to center or very near. I like(need) a deflexed recurve-style grip. Just don't shoot bows with the straighter longbow grips well.

I purchased a Horne brushbow last year and probably should have kept it but the grip, although very comfortable, was just too small for me. I felt like I was choking a goose.LOL

Any info and pics would be appreciated. I have looked at Shrews and the Kanati and like them but have little experience with longbows in general.

Mark, here is my Morrison Shawnee with Dakota limbs. I used to shoot Shrews but the grip and speed of the Morrison sold me. What you described above is just what I look for and found in Bob's bows.Check out Bob's website Morrison Archery he is a sponsor here. hey Mark!  since you're in Alabama make a trip to (or call) Sipsey River Traditional Archery and check out John's new line of longbows. I'd bet you can get one with a grip like you memtioned plus, John is a wealth of information when it comes to R/D longbows.

Take a look at a Morrison Cougar or Dakota.  They seem to have everything you're looking for.

Check out the Appollo and Tiapan built by JD Berry. The bows have a forward handle, and a great locator grip. I've always shot recurves, and had mucho trouble with longbow grips until shooting an Appollo. Both bows are cut to center, plenty quick, quiet, and zero hand shock. James is a fine craftsman, and a true artist. My favorite bow is a Sky Archery Rogue hybrid by
Earl Hoyt Jr., 60"AMO, 58#, centershot, recurve-style handle

It's my understanding that Mathews archery bought all of Mr. Hoyt's old tooling, and produces their "Heritage" line with his designs.

Mathews Heritage Hawk is a dead ringer for the Rogue

huntit, I love the looks of Morrison bows(longbow and recurve) but I think they may be a little pricy for my first trip to the longbow world.LOL
One day I will own a Morrison of some type, but I think I'll have to start out with something a little more conservative in price.

Mark what I used to do is figure out what I think I would like/try. Pick one up used in the classifieds. Shoot it to see if you like it ,then if you do you can order a new one, or keep it/ trade/sell for something else.Some bowyers offer try befor you buy also.Sipsey River has a bunch of bows in stock [new and used] I would consider making a trip too.John is very helpfull.

I would concur with the Morrison Dakota or Cougar suggestions based on what you describe for the grip style you like. You can find them for sale at a reasonable price if you hunt around a bit. I have a one piece Cougar and a Shawnee with Dakota limbs and like the Shawnee a little better, seems to draw smoother than the Cougar.

Recurve50lbs, I have a friend who has a TCLB and I love how light they are in the hand and they are beautiful bows, but of the ones I've held/shot, I just can't get used to the grip. I guess I could see if Doug would do a custom grip though.

Have gotten some great info so far, but I'm still taking notes.

Mark, check out Firehawks from Rodney Wright up in Quebec-I love mine, 57lbs at 29 inches, fast flight string, and puts out my little carbons at over 200fps!  Haven't tried Wensels on the business end yet, but they weigh the same as my target tips, so shouldn't be much difference.  She's a little sizzler, light, no hand shock, almost no stacking, and a beauty as well!
