Any heavier weight target bows out there?
« on: February 15, 2011, 08:00:00 PM »
Maybe 20 years ago, I found this 69 Tamerlane and haven't seen a heavier one before or since.  It's in about as good original condition as you will find.  I strung it up and shot it again this afternoon.  It's not a rocket launcher - but is a real nice shooter!  In fairness to the bow, I shot the same 600 grain arrows I was using for the practice session. Am sure some arrow tuning would improve it a bundle.

Anyway, for years I've wondered if there are other similar target models - or was there only one crazy dude who special-ordered this bow?

OK, I'm gonna try to post these images now.  If what shows up is a sumo wrestler sunbathing in the nude....it was just a mistake by photobucket!!!     :biglaugh:

...and I thought anything over 40 was a heavy target bow???  I did see a 45# Tamerlane once, but the owner would not part with it.

A few years ago, I bought a 69" Howatt Monterey (rosewood handle and white limbs) that was marked 55# also.  Holy cow!  It was obviously mismarked and was at least 60#.

Well, there ya go.  I had to ask the question and now I can't claim the heaviest target bow ever!   Seriously, every time I looked at mine, I wondered how many others were around.  (Wanna sell that Monterrey, Lon?)

Very understandable that top tournament guys would want to hunt with a familiar bow.  Also have '60s Kodiak Specials in 57 and 60#, but I always thought of them as a little bit of a crossover bow...no reason for that feeling though-they were definitely configured as a target bow.

You brought up the Monterrey.....the first or second bow that Donnie ever did for me was a Monterrey that I bought for $30 at a pawn shop.  I have never seen a finish so spiderwebbed but I'd never seen one before.  The bowdoc made it magnificent....to this day, it's still the only one I remember having a chance of getting.  BD won't remember it....his brain cells have been addled by too many old damaged bows that he had to resurrect.  Heck, he probably wouldn't recognize it if I showed it to him now! Maybe I'll bring it to Moses Lake and see if he recognizes it!

I have several of the older Bear target bows ranging from the mid 20#'s up to the high 30's. These were the popular weights back then and matched up with the right shaft give excellent cast. I very recently acquired a 1962 Kodiak Special which is a sweet 43 #'s.
That's a nice one oldbohntr......

Larry,
Wow, are those nice!  You've got a good eye for special wood grain!  I made a decision to downsize the collection about 10 years ago, and I think I might regret that a lot of the target models went away!

Thanks oldbohntr
I don't normally look for them but if they come my way and their nice I don't pass them up. The massive wood riser's can be eye catching.

Larry,

That is a very nice lineup of target models! I recently started aquiring a few myself. I really haven't been searching them out either but they have a way of showing up and I can't refuse them.

I thought I stumbled onto rare heavy weight target bow recently too. It was a Tartar and the seller said it was 50#. I wasn't all that surprised that it was 35# when I received it in the mail but I was kind of amazed that it was still strung.

I received one strung that was many years ago.   Can't remember what bow it was, but I do remember that the limbs were not twisted(!)

Browning Explorer (62").  This one is 52#@28" and I'm drawing to 30".  Weighs 2 lbs, 10 oz.  Not sure that it was designed to be a target bow, but it feels like one.    ;)

Thanks Jack
A nice Tarter in the 40# range would be one I would like to have. No luck so far. An archery friend of mine used to hunt with a low 40# target bow and was very successful. Stated he liked the stability and accuracy of the bow. Actually shot off an elevated rest so he could shoot vanes in the rain.

Sorry olbohntr, that 55# Monterey found a temporary home in Oregon a while back.  I recently heard it was sold again when the owner grew tired of shooting a target bow over 60#.

I have a 68" Pearson palamino that's 54# if anyone wants to see it I can probably get  pictures  tomorrow with my wife's help, it's very smooth and really likes banana cut feathers, although not a speed demon,it's very accurate if I do what I'm supposed to.

Man, did I have a decent little collection for awhile....gone now though. I had a Browning challenge at 50#, a browning olympian at 55#, 61 Kodiak Specials -one at 45#,one at 48#, a 67 kodiak Special at 48# (BAD stress), two heavy Tamerlanes - one at 48# one at 55#, Hoyt PM at 44#, Hoyt 5PM at 48#, a 70 " Herters Perfection Sitka at 50#( shot HORRIBLE), a 68" Staghorn Triumph at 55#, 67 Bear Polar at 50#, and multiple Howatt bows over 45#.

Out of all of these, three bows stand out as far as performance...the Hoyt 68" 5PM at 48#, the 61 Kodiak Special 68" 48#, and believe it or not..the damn 67 Bear Polar 68" 50# shocked everyone.
