58" bows

I've got an itch for a 58" recurve. There are alot of older bows from companies that made them (Bear, Shakespeare, Browning, Pearson, Wing - to name a few). My question: Are there some to avoid? I'm talking about some that just weren't much count. Thanks for any info. Lippe

Every bow has it's own personality so there is no way to generalize and tell you to avoid X given bow and there is a lot involved with what you also personally like and do not like so shoot a bunch and select one that is right for you. Jim

My favorite is Groves, least favorite Bear. Just my personal preference based on how they shoot to me. This is just 58 inch bows not all bow lengths. I just don't care for how 58 inch Bear bows shoot.

58" Howatt High Speed is a good one.

A buddy of my swears by his 1967 58 inch Kodiak Hunter.....to avoid?...... I have this sickness where I LIKE EM ALL. lol

I'd like to shoot a bunch of them, just don't know how to accomplish that. I figure that there's some makes of bows out there that were duds. I suppose if that were the case, then the company that made them would have discontinued them. So, I guess any of the more popular ones would be worth a try at the right price. Lippe

I'll just keep using my Pearson Hunter 58". But then I may use my 58" Astro II. Ok so I can not make up my mind, but there all fun to shoot.

I had a 58" Hoyt Pro Hunter that shot well and have now a 58" Tice and Watts Spartan Hunter Mark I that is also nice (my tree stand bow).

I recently shot a Border Black Douglas in 58" and that bow was phenomenal.

DHowatt, Balboa is one one my favorite 3d bows, Not the best or prettiest wood from the 60s.. Smooth solid shooter in 58".

I'll second what Bjorn said.  My '66 58" Grizzly is my best shooting bow so far, and I have a Morrison and a Northern Mist.  Have had Bracks, Fedoras, Bighorns and a few other well known bows.  If I could afford a few more 55-60# '66 Grizz's I would own several more.  But what shoots best for me might not be the same for you.

I like all the 58" bows as I have a short draw. One of my favorites and most common to find is the Red Wing Hunter, especially before AMF. Great bow but have to pay the price for good weight

Larry Whiffin also put together a solid.58, comet. Its one of my favorite huntin recurves, has a few notches in it. Agree with Larry on Wing bows in the 58 in models. sure like to shoot the RWH that Glenn, Bowdoc, and Lesaint45 signed. Stared at that many timeswhile while visiting with Glenn in his livin room at NWA..One of Mr St Charles favorites of the era, Wonder where its at now?

Those 66" and 67" Grizzlies are also my favorite shooters in that 58" lenth.  They remind me of the '61 Kodiak which was a 60" of course.  Next would be that Howatt Hi-Speed.

I did purchase a Browning Safari last week - it's 60" though. Waiting for a string for it. I'm thinking grizzly, pearson, or shakespeare necedah on the 58" right now, but that might change tomorrow. There are probably millions of 58" bows out there that would be fine, but I'm a fairly patient man, so I'll wait until one looks/feels right. Thanks for the responses guys.

I love to shoot my 58" Howatt Hi-Speed and my 58" Root Warrior but my "go-to bow" for many years of whitetail hunting was my 49# Wildcat. That's a "made for the trade" version of the Pearson Hunter. I bought it brand new in 1965, camo'd it with layers of duck boat paint, and used it for years to keep the freezer full of venison. A really good bow IMO!
