Broadhead ID? / Info
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:00:00 PM »
Picked up some stuff today.  Included were some heads I am not familiar with.  Sorry the pics aren't the best, but it's all I can do at the moment.

In first pic the left is a Hilbre.
Middle is a ???  Has an interesting circular insert that looks impossible to sharpen.

The second pic has a closer pic of the one in question next to a Bodkin.

Any information on the integrity / huntability of the Bodkin, Hilbre or to me "mystery" broadhead would be appreciated.  The Hilbre doesn't look like it would be legal in Ohio, and I doubt I would replace my greenies with any of these but they are kind of interesting.  The Bodkin here is definitely not the best one I have but you get the idea.  They look pretty good.

Your mystery head is a 1956 Trail-Eze manufactured in Dearborn, Michigan.

I've never used any of the heads you have posted, but someone will come along that has.

It seems there were some strange ideas about penetration in the old days before Trad Gang.
Zwickeys and Bears are very useable even today.........

others not so much

Yep, Some old heads "wont work well" by todays standards.

But there ARE SOME I dont think I would hunt with but .......these arent one of em.

The bottom three is what I am refering to. The other two?....nah...they never work either. HEHE!

Steve,
Seeing as you're concerned about the effectiveness of those top two I will just PM you my address and you can mail them out to me...don't want you accidentally putting them on an arrow and hunting with them.  Just think of it as me doing you a favor   :)   :)

Thanks for the info here so far folks.

I researched Hilbre on this forum a bit.  What I have is pretty much junk in terms of that head I think.  I didn't catch it yesterday as I became rushed, but the base on it is plastic.

From what I read Hilbre made some decent heads in the 1950's but turned to these plastic bases in the 1960's some time.

Ceme24 sounds like the makings of a broadhead collector to me!

And the Hilbre have threads that screw the point into the wood.  So they may not be glued on, just try unscrewing them.  Bill

Even when you THINK they are attached, pull.

I picked up this Ace Standard on an arrow(many thanks to that trader if he is here, dont know for sure) but I grabbed the head and pulled.....it was just stuck on the arrow.

but....cool arrow too so might stick it BACK on, this time with hot melt!

Shown next to a shooter Ace Super Express single bevel.
