Leather wrap for Kodiak Handle
« on: May 15, 2012, 06:25:00 PM »
I dont know if is the proper forum to ask this question but since the Restoration 101 forum is here well here goes.

When I came to the part of installing the leather handle on the grip Bowdoc specifically mentions that the leather is cut to a template he has. That the leather is not just cut square, it kind of sort of has a dogleg shape to it. No wonder I have not been able to re-wrap my 56" Kodiak.

Anyone have a template I could be directed to so I can cut my leather from? Heck I would even be willing to purchase a hunk of leather if I had to.

Sure would appreciate it.

Andy

I have one that worked well on a 59 Kodiak. PM me your address and I'll cut out a duplicate and send it in the mail.

If yo just oversize your leather then wet and form you can then draw your lines lightly with a pencil cut it and skive and your pattern is done.

Bd 101 states you can use the straight cut pattern for anything up to the 59. He is shown regripping a 56 KS with this straight cut pattern. You could email and have the edited version sent to you and get it from there.

Just a thought I have used:  scrapbook/craft foam to make a pattern; it is thick and supple, easy to wrap around your bow grip, like leather but is inexpensive and easily cut.  you can even use light sticky tack to form the pattern on the bow,(similar look as having glued on leather).  Once you have the pattern adjusted to your liking label it and save.

I made the the template for my '59 grizzly by wrapping the grip with masking tape, several layers, exactly the way I wanted the leather to be. I  then gently cut the masking tape grip to the front of the bow and peeled it off. I then flattened it and stucked it on a piece of paper.  Then I drew on the paper an overlap.  I just cut out the new template and used it to trace the grip on the leather.  You might have to trim a little here and there and the leather still has to be streched some but the basic shape is there.

Guys,

Thanks for the really great tips. Kind of feel somewhat stupid for not thinking of using something else rather than the actual leather for the template.

Again really appreciate all the neat ideas. This proves again why this is such a great site when people share like this.
