Shot from the Past - Art Young
« on: May 25, 2012, 02:56:00 PM »
These photos were originally posted in the Instinctive Archer Magazine Winter 1998. They were submitted by my friend Lou Scarcella M.D. They were given to him by one of his patients. "She and her husband were personal friends of Art Young and visited with him frequently at the archery range in Griffith Park near Hollywood. She remembered Mr. Young as a gentle and friendly man and an accomplished violin player." Lou grew up in the Pasadena area and has fond memories of the Pasasdena Roving Archers. We became friends as members of the (now closed) El Toro Archery Club in the late 80's. It was in the mid 90's when he showed up one day with these pictures and asked if I wanted copies. I had forgotten I had them until recently going through some things and found them again. I thought some of you might like to see them. I ran this by Rob DiStefano to get his thoughts and he said OK to post so here they are!

Cool photos.  Note Young's three fingers under. The thumb [not visible] is sort of hooked around to the left side of the string and pressed against the top of the nock.  The release has a couple names but I believe Compton called in the Sioux lock.  I'm thinking there are published photos of him shooting split fingers as well.

One photo shows a string keeper through the hole in the upper horn nock.  There are not a lot of photos around showing a string keeper as well as this.

I cannot remember seeing either of the two photos of Young in a suit.  I've seen others of him in a suit but not these two.

Pretty cool stuff, thanks for sharing.

Good, I'm glad you guy's enjoyed the pics and bit of history.
Thank You Cliff for your added in depth knowledge and expertise. It is always appreciated! I have seen other pictures of Mr Young shooting 3 fingers under and I believe referred to as the Apache method. The picture above I was not quite sure but your detailed explaination has made it all the more clear. Again, Most Sincerely Appreciated!!
I need to get these in frames so I don't misplace them a second time.
