Moment in History...
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:33:00 AM »
I am a director for the Wisconsin Bowhunting Heritage Foundation Museum, and I am in the process of getting this photo framed and labeled for the Museum...

thought you fellas might enjoy a peek...maybe some of you even know more about the history of the image????

the second image is a photo of the dedication on the back of the 29" x 30" photo (mounted on heavy cardstock-3/8" thick), and photo is mounted so that the two outside edges (left and right) wrap around the cardstock (most likely so it would not need a frame)...

the dedication is hand-signed from Fred Bear to Shirley Whiffen at Whiffen Archery in Milwaukee in 1973...the piece hung in the shop there for many years, and was just recently donated to the WBHF Museum...

I would also encourage anyone to tour the museum anytime you might find yourself in the Clintonville, WI area, we have a terrific collection.

Don- Cool picture.I have one from the same setting that I got from Bob Vostry's estate many years ago.He had several old, original photos from the early days of archery here in Michigan.Bob worked for Bear Archery while in Detroit. Here is the picture I have.Similar to yours but yours seems to have been taken while the subjects were a little more ready for the picture.Same guys with "Oscar".I could be wrong, and I don't want to argue with Papa Bear on this one,but I always thought this photo was taken at the 1st N.F.A.A. Tournament in Allegan Michigan in 1946.The reason I say this is that I have another photo of Fred from the Allegan shoot and he appears to be wearing the same white T-shirt and sweater, and in these two photos he appears to have the same name-tag as the other participants wore for that tournament. It is easier to see in my photo.I have other photos from the tournament I can try to verify.I know "Oscar" was at the tournament.Either way it's a great photo of some of archery's greatest players. Here's my picture.Note the name tag Fred is wearing and compare it to the name-tag that belonged to Daisy Olsen from my other recent post about Michigan Archery History. What do you think?   :dunno:

Johnny- you're probably right; note the question mark he put after "early 40's"...

he wasn't sure when it seems to me

pretty cool...!!

Yes- With all the places Fred was during all those years I imagine he could get a little confused as to dates and locations. At least he did have all the names right. What a cool poster you have.
Also kind of interesting(and sad) that Fred is taking down that wonderful piece of history because it "means nothing" to the present archery people.Unfortunately that seems to be the case more and more as time goes on.
We are keepin' it alive here.
