1971 Super K refinish questions
« on: August 05, 2012, 05:09:00 AM »
OK, I've printed off previous tutorials and received the word document on bow restoration 101 from Nick, so I'm on the way.  I have a couple of questions on this bow (picture attached).

1) Hopefully you can see in the photo that a hole was drilled through the riser to insert a Berger button. I've removed the button and would like to fill the hole (they must have started from the sight window side because they drilled out the bottom portion of the coin too-I'll get a new one from 3 Rivers). Any thoughts on fix for this. I'm thinking picking up a dowel from hardware store and gluing in and staining as close as possible. On the rest side, a tall sideplate covers the hole. A new coin on the opposite side will cover a quarter of the fix on that side. Glue recommendations for this part???

2) There is a little rusting on the 5/16 riser insert accessory bushing. Are you guys pulling this after heating, cleaning up and re-epoxying or leaving in and trying to clean up with some steel wool before refinishing. It looks like just the slightest of surface rust.

3) This will be a hand wipe on refinish job (no sprayer). Would the preferred finish be Caseys true oil or Minwax wipe on poly (or something new on the market)??

The sanding for the finish removal is coming along (Bow Docs comment about the finish on these being hard and a pain in the --- is correct). New decals will be on the way from Al shortly so I'm excited about this first project. You may also be able to see where the stick on rest from previous owner took the finish right off the bow. Between that and the finish checks on the limbs, I decided this old classic needed a new finish.

Try to find a maple plug. They can be had from a woodworker supplier like Woodcraft. The plugs are made by drilling in the face of the board . The difference is the plug will have grain the end of a dowel will have a different grain pattern if any at all.
This is what BowDoc recommended I do.
