Bear Grizzly, what can you tell me about it?
« on: February 02, 2013, 04:18:00 PM »
Hello everyone, I am new to collecting and traditional archery in general.  I just won this bow off of **** a few days ago.

Check out the pictures from my photo bucket:

5p6931
58"
58#

That is all I know from what the bow says.  What else can you tell me?

Thanks,

Jake

Those zebra ones were made in 1964 and 1965, yours is a 1965. and quite a rare one at 58#.
Give it a good shooting and report back!

I am waiting on my strings to come in for it and I will definitely let you know how it shoots.  How can you tell it was from 1965?

From the 5 in the 5p6931?

The first digit of the serial number was the manufacture year on Bear bows 1965-69. Other year Bears could start with those same numbers so you can't go by that alone. The 1964 and 65 Grizzlies were the only years with the zebrawood risers.

Nice Bow. The 64-65 grizzlies are great shooting Bows. One of my personal favorites, not only for looks but also performance.

Took a while but I just got my strings today.
They look awesome!! (1st class flemish strings)

Just have to finish polyurethaning the tips and then I will be able to shoot.

I shot the bow today and it was probably one of the most exciting things I have done in a while.

My draw length is 26.6 at #54 or so
and the arrow was about 450 grains

The bow is amazingly fast.
Probably the best shooting bow I have shot.

Very smooth draw.

Can't wait to go hunting!!

Nice!

I have a 50# '64 and it is a pleasure to shoot.  I'd say you have a pretty rare bow at 58#.  Well, maybe not "rare", but definately harder to find once you get over 45-50 lbs  Looks to be in great shape, too.

and you are right, they are very smooth shooting and surprisingly fast.  I hope to kill a hog or turkey with mine this spring.

Besides for some a few scratches and having to refinish the tips everything else is in great shape for being about 45 years old.

No stress marks in the glass and the limbs are as straight as can be.

Good luck on your hunt this spring.
I am saving up some time so I can take a week or two for deer and bear this fall.  First time archery hunting so it should be interesting.

Speaking of the speed of the bow. I was shooting with my dad a few weeks ago and he uses a 58" 41# Red wing hunter from the early 70s I think.  It seems to me that the wing is faster upon release than my grizzly? Very interesting anyways.
