Removing Limb Twist 72 Kodiak Magnum Now w/pics
« on: August 21, 2013, 08:19:00 AM »
I lucked up and got a RH   :(   Kodiak Magnum for cheap. It had vertical splits in the glass but I got those filled with Loktite and then sanded down the old finish, which was yellowed and cracked/crazed. I covered it with a few coats of Spar Urethane and it looks good but there's a wiggle in the flats of the limbs when I rest it on its belly with limb tips up. About 1/8" of opposing twist in the limbs.

How can I get this out? I have heard of using warm water but wanted to check with you guys.

I want to use this bow as a workout bow for my opposite shooting side. 50# @ 28

Thank you.

You can just send it to me. You don't want it, and I will dispose of it properly for you ;o) Along with that signed bow in your avatar.

You can use warm water as you stated, but not to hot! I am sure others will chime in with exactly how to get that twist out for you. Best of luck!

I've taken a few twists out, but I do not use water for fear of it getting into areas it should not.

If twist is not too bad, string it and merely twist limb in opposite direction holding for 20-30 seconds.  Repeat until string lies flat.  Then I leave bow strung for a few days checking status by pulling and slowly releasing to see if string lies in grove.

If you think you want heat, try a hairdryer but do not get limbs too hot. I've used this on badly twisted bows.

Oddly enough, most bows will shoot just fine with a slight twist as long as it is not so bad that it unstrings itself upon shooting.  Good luck and let us know what happens.

I haven't even strung it yet. Been working and it's been raining alot. Plus I need to put a rest and shelf plate back on it.

I'll try to post some pics.

If you feel you have completely sealed the limbs you can use a wet towel heated in microwave. Wrap the limb with the towel and hand twist  in opposite direction.  May take more than one attempt.  Works for me.  Good luck.

There is absolutely no reason to use water on a bow limb. Why anyone would even consider this is beyond me. As Blackhawk said, most twists can be worked out simply by twisting in the opposite direction, leaving strung, check and repeat as necessary. If it is really bad, and you feel heat is needed, use a hair dryer on low and don't get the limb too hot to touch.

Well, I carry my bows in snow and rain, so, water is not the concern, for me anyway. My concern was the heat more so than anything. The limbs are sealed well. Yes, water can be of concern, but I have hunted in soaking rain plenty of times and shot 3D in soaking rain and none of my bows have suffered.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I will try stringing and twisting room @ temp and dry first.

You can see some of the twist in the bottom pic.

I've had good luck with a heating pad. Wrap the pad around the limb. Turn the heat on till the limb is warm (not hot) Gently twist the limb opposite the twist while running under cold water.

I had a guy show me once at an archery show how he works a twisted limb. There was no hot water, heating pads or microwaves around. He simply rubbed the limb between his thumb and first finger, applying some pressure and some speed. This friction caused the limb to get pretty warm after a short time. Then he would twist the limb in the opposite direction of the twist and hold. I just did this on both the upper and lower limbs of a badly twisted  bow I picked up recently. It was twisted pretty bad and I didn't think it could be fixed but I figured I would try the old "friction" method and it worked! Have almost all of the twist out using only my fingers to generate heat. It is taking a few tries to work it out but it is working. It's not real easy on the fingertips after awhile and the old arms can cramp up a bit,but it's a method that works as an alternative when no other heat source is available.

Looks to me the previous owner used the leg-thru method of stringing. That's what the twists look like anyway.

PM me your ideas in case we can't get together for a bit, if you don't mind  :)

I have done a lot of twisted limbs. I have had the best results using an electric blanket to heat the limb.
