Help: broke a latch part on mag TD

Got a new B mag in the mail today. It was in rough shape. After admiring it for a bit and because I have a couple others, I decided to try my hand at taking it apart - thinking I would get it dipped or something. Well, everything went smoothly until I tried to remove the part that the latch hooks into. Not sure what to call it. The plastic piece that the spring pushes on from the back and that "hooks" the latch on the front.

I first ran a paper clip through the small diameter hole on the side and then through the holes where this "latch hook" is connected. I figured there must be a pin or something holding it in. The clip went all the way through so I figured, the pin must have fallen out. Soooo, dumbly, I took to prying the latch hook out. After breaking it into pieces, I got it out. So, now I have a riser with no latch hook.

It looks like there is a pin there, but it must be like a small diameter "pipe" that is put in to hold the hook in place?

So a couple questions?

Anyone know how I can replace it?

Is there a proper procedure to remove these? If so, I can take one from a c- mag that I don't use. Any help on this, would be very much appreciated!!!!

 You need to drive that pin out to remove the latch. I use a small finish nail with the point cut off for a punch.

Update: I took a small allen wrench - cut it to about 1.5" long and used it to punch the posts out - worked great.

. . . Now it is prepped for refinishing.  I will get some aircraft stripper tomorrow.  Not sure yet about paining/dipping/powder coating/etc.  I like the idea of painting it myself - just so I can get moving on the project.  We'll see.

Good luck on your project. I have three or four waiting for me to do. You will probably want to use a primer especially made for aluminum/ magnesium. You can then paint with Krylon or another brand rattle can paint and apply a clear finish over that to protect it.

Monte Dunaway has a selection of retro parts for the Magnesium risers if you need something.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I have a bunch and have always left them with their original finish. If this turns out well; maybe I will do a few more. I will post some pics when it's all finished up. I think may take the latches from this one and put them on a real nice flocked A that I have because these latches have the little bears. Maybe get new ones for from three rivers per the link above for this one - make this one a refurbed hunting bow - maybe make a matching one with a more beat up A that I have.

Both this B and my more beat up A have pretty low serial numbers - particularly for lefties. I think they may have been early and maybe in the first lefty runs. Seems a shame somewhat to refinish them unless necessary.

What are your thoughts on refinishing them? In your opinion does it matter much from a collectible perspective if you refinish mag riser?

From what I see in the Mag risers prettier is better. I suppose a mint original condition riser is always going to be worth more than a nicely refinished one but how much more I couldn't say.

Guys the punch I used when taking apart my mag was a roll pin punch(sized correctly) and the pin was a roll pin so the punch has a ball on the end so it goes in the hole of the pin.Try that instead I think it will work better.Kip
