Redbud for bow wood?
« on: December 16, 2007, 09:11:00 AM »
The ice storm has provided a lot of bow wood opportunities around here. My neighbor would love for me to have his broken redbud tree.

Has anyone tried it for a selfbow?

I have never used red bud for a bow but I would definitely give it a try if I had some. It has very hard wood and is a legume like locust and a few others.
Please be very careful cutting any wood that might be under tension like most downed wood will be. Storm damage wood can be a good source for bow wood but can be VERY dangerous to collect!!!          Pat

Try it and see.  If it doesn't work, you're not out much.  It's free wood.  :)

That's exactly right Dano!

Well I went over there and took the main trunk out for my neighbor and split it.

Have you ever noticed how a tree can look like prime bow wood from 75 yards away but turns out to be firewood? I did get some usable wood but it wasn't a motherlode. It will probably twist up like a barber pole as it dries.   :knothead:

Been there done that, firewood comes in handy.
