kodiak only for Fred ?

Did Fred ever hunt with any of his other great modles such as the grizzly , kmag , kodiak hunter ect ?

The only ones I'm aware of are the Super Kodiak and Take Down.He usually carried the top of the line hunting bow for that year.

...and he used the Kodiak prior to the Super K and the TD.

Before the Kodiak in 1950, I bet he hunted with the Grizzly, and before that,

In the pheasant hunting film, it looks like he is using a camo grizzly.

Fred hunted with whatever was available...wish I had not given away my copy but in his book Billets to Bows Glenn St. Charles talks about Fred showing up at his place on business and then they decided to do some hunting...since Fred had not brought a bow along one was soon modified for his purposes...at that time Papa Bear was only comfortable using his bow hand for the arrow rest so that bow needed to be modified to allow that...eventually the Takedown became his bow of choice and I think he shot them off a somewhat modified shelf

Only my opinion, I never met him and have no first hand knowledge, but I would guess he shot the top of the line because as owner/manager that is what he should shoot.  You want those who have the money to buy the top of your line so that's what you shoot.  You want other folks to aspire to that and buy what they can afford. If you shoot a Grizzly then why should someone buy a Super K?
 
It's simply intelligent marketing, and he was an excellent marketer.  But, of course, he did pull out that Root and shoot it when no one was looking   :p

I have read in one of the books about him just what was said. He would use the top of the line bow that year. He took his stuff off the line as he had no time to make arrows. He then would modify the bow the way he liked. Mr. Bear was a busy person and he did not get to even shoot for months at a time.
Of course he used the best he had to offer, good business sense. He may not have shot those other bows but I would venture to guess he had his imput on their design.

Changing models and shooting all those different bows was probably the reason he was not a very good shot.        

At least, that's what I've heard.          :D

I can't remember the name, but there was a Bear Archery film made of Fred and friends hunting Whitetails in Penn.

The film was made to promote the Kodiak Magnum, and all (even Fred) were using K-Mags.

I've only seen him pictured with Kodiaks, Super K's and T/D's. He was quoted as saying 60" was the perfect length for a hunting bow. I believe his hunting companion, Bob Munger hunted with a K-Mag.

Fred was a good enough shot to win the Michigan State Championships three times in the 1930's. No idea what bow he used although pictures may well exist.

My comment on Fred's ability was just a tease.    

I recall Glenn St. Charles' reply to a friend's question about Fred's shooting ability.  

Glenn said, "Fred was just OK."

Now I don't know what that means to Glenn, but I think most of us would agree that Fred was just a little better than "OK".

Maybe there's a touch of professional jealousy in his reply.
