In 1956 Elmer Keith was promoting the 44 magnum, looks like the '56 Bear archery ad writer was using "magnum" to show stopping power during the same period Detroit added tail fins to cars to look like rockets

I do not know when the term "magnum" came into use, but Ole Elmer Keith was responsible for the .357 Magnum back in 1935.  Elmer was also the one responsible for the .41 Magnum and the .44 Mag that Tony mentioned.

  I have gone through the E mails that I have received with no significant information to report about the painting other than we have the right people to find out anything that may be available. Mostly the information is about lack of care for items in Bass Pro Warehouse. Sadly it seems as though there are items sitting and deteriorating in that building that should come out and be refurbished. Will keep posted with any new information.

Much of the following biographical data is from a short essay by Camille Cazedessus, Jr. in his long running fanzine, ERBdom, issue #68, March 1973.

Zdenek Burian - SrdceZdenek Burian (Zdenek is pronounced "Zeh-DEN-yeck" because there's a little "v" over the n. "Burian is "BURR-ee-yahn" - pronounciation courtesy of the eminent William Stout - thanks, Bill.) was born in 1905 in Moravia, Czech Republic. He was to become one of the most influential depicters of prehistoric life of the century, rivaled only by Charles R. Knight.

In 1923 he was enrolled as "a student in the second year" at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Prague. I assume that to be equivalent to a Sophomore in college. He was a published illustrator at the time. Apparently he wasn't making a living at it, though, as he worked as a construction laborer to pay his tuition. He flunked out of school and moved outside of Prague. He performed odd jobs for a living while he painted adventure illustrations, effectively teaching himself "using different techniques" until developing his own style. The economy of the time forced him further into the surrounding countryside where he became a "backwoodsman" for a time, living off the land. This personal bond with nature would follow him his entire life and give his paintings a reality that was honest and special.

- special THANKS to Shane, who wrote info about our progress and who helps me A LOT. I still believe we will be able to find more info about paintings .. either "known one" or "lost ones" ...

- Today, parcel with Burian's painting finally arrived to my home. I opened it and saw it in a person for the first time ... Believe me, It's even more impressive, I've ever expected (even it's just reprint). Can't imagine to see original ....

and what's even better - seller enclosed special gift for me .. post stamp with the same picture. For free .. as a bonus. I am really moved (hope it's the appropriate term).


Sometimes this world may look weird and bad. But if You meet people like you and seller (don't know his real name), You find it is a still beautiful place .. thank you ...
