66 grizzly dogleg- need help
« on: September 03, 2015, 07:38:00 PM »
i've been looking online at a 1966 grizzly dogleg - 62" 40# ;
it lookes to be in pretty good shape with a few of the usual vertical stress cracks but overall it " looks" solid. my ques is i've heard that there have been a number of problems with this design, are all doglegs "dogs" and not safe to shoot? i would really like to get this bow but i don't really care to have a face full of green glass.

The doglegs were made in 1963.

Type 1 Kodiak Mags were the recalled problem.
The Grizzly's are fine to shoot......

well, i sent payment today and it should be here fri the 11th.
from only veiwing online pics this is what i could tell :
the serial # started with 6 so i'm assuming a 1966- but i forget ; when did the 60's serial #s start matching the year?
the limbs were maked as a grayling bow.
top limb marked as a grizzly.
belly and back are my favorite mint green glass.
the handle is clearly a dogleg.
condition looked pretty good.
paid only 179 + shipping.
i'm fairly new to collecting bears but i think i got a decent deal. the seller seemed to know very little about bows and found it in an estate sale, so i only had pics to go on.

I have had a number of dog leg grizzlies and shot them with no problems..........there were two types-a fat one and a skinny one both shot great. The only dog leg that was a real problem was one of the kmags IMO. Show us pics when it arrives.

1963 Dogleg Grizzlys are typically excellent shooting bows.
If only I could find a Type 1 (skinny) LH...

You should really enjoy it.  The vertical crazing is typical in Bear bows and most of the time not a concern.  A careful inspection of any bow, especially a 50+ year old one, is obviously prudent and it's not possible for anyone here to provide a true gauge of safety without at least pictures or seeing the bow itself.

I have owned dozens of old Grizzlys and never had an issue.  I hope you enjoy it.  Make sure you have a good B-50 or padded loop string and that the tips are solid.

Just a couple months ago I found a nice 63 Grizzly (type 1...or the skinny one as Bjorn says) and really like how it shoots.

And that aqua color glass sure screams "ole timer", but the more I shoot it the better it looks.

Good luck with yours.  (BTW, Bear serial numbers only give a clue to specific year from 1965-69).
