Bow String Formulas for Classic and Axis Nocks
« on: December 19, 2007, 08:14:00 AM »
I'm sitting here in Mosul Iraq thinking about how I will improve my setups when I return home in 6 Mos.

I build my own flemish strings with B50 and I have tried all the various ways of opening and closing nocks on the string.

I've decided I want to build strings to match the gap in my nocks. I use woodies with classic nocks and axis carbons.

Does anyone have a good recommended bow string formula (# strands + serving material type) for classic nocks or axis nocks?

All of my bows are in the 50# class.

Thanks for the suggestions in advance.

Randy,
I usually use 16 strand for 50 lb. bows. I don't like strings any heavier then necessary for performance reasons.I have tried  using different thicknesses of serving material plus serving the string where the arrow/nock will be located, first with dental floss, then finally with reg. serving material. Now I just tweak the nock after dipping nock in hot water til it fits the string then I dip the nock in cool water to "set it".

God bless you. Our prayers are with you. Have a joyous Hoiday season.

My B50 strings:  12 strand (14 in the loops) served with .026 Diamondback serving fit the bohning classic nocks perfectly.  The .025 No. 62 serving from BCY is actually thicker than the .026 Diamondback from Brownell.

I don't know about the axis nocks, but 12 strand B50 string served with .020 should fit the Bohning signature nocks.

My bows are all 50-56#.  12 strands of B50 are more than enough.  Anything over that feels like a rope to me.

You might want to send Chad at recurves.com a message.  He made a couple strings that fight my axis nocks just right using D-97 and halo serving.

I use 14 strand B50 and plain old Nylon (I think) serving that I believe is .018". They fit good with 5/16" classic nocks.

I am very fussy about nock fit; so if you are making your own strings just lay string material under the serving, parallel to the string and sufficient for the nock you are going to use. I like a string that is not too fat-say 10- 12 strands- when I start to serve if I am unsure of the fit I place a couple of strands under the serving and test and adjust till it is perfect. I have also sent string makers  nocks in the past just so there is no excuse for anything less than a perfect fit.
