« on: September 18, 2010, 08:30:00 PM »
My 7 year old son is a cub scout unfortunately my job at the railroad keeps me from the meetings but my wife fills in. Anyway we Got to a scout camp today with hatchery an Bb guns so my son can get his belt loop badge an they have army personnel doing the instructing they were using red fiberglass recurves that were strung backwards an were letting kids retrieve there arrows while other kids were shooting an when I stepped on an made them stop shooting I was informed that I wasn't qualified instructor an they were doing it how they were told the head scout master just told meif I didn't like How he runs things I could get to his level of certifacation an do it myself so I look like the bad Guy to my son since I wouldn't let him particapate in any of it

I would be calling the cub scout board in your area. I am a den leader and would never allow this to happen. I am not an instrucer but they would respect everyones opinion. That should never happen. See what chapter you are in and give them a call. Also anyone should be able to take the training for it . Then you can teach it. Good luck and keep us updated.
If today was perfect, There would be no need for tomorrow

Jason, those guys probably didn't know anything about archery except what they had been shown.  Pegg gives some good advice.  Good luck!

I agree that Pegg has some good advice, I am not a Scout member but my wife runs a Girl Scout troup & I assist my friend in instruction & what you describe is very unsafe & would not be taught in that maner.

A couple of things: Was this at a camp? Is it a sanctioned range? Have you lodged a complaint with your District Executive?

You have a legitimate complaint and it should be rectified quickly. This is a dangerous situation. Call the District Executive in the morning! You should also be able to call the camp director.

If you need help, I will make the call so PM me. I need to know what the district and Council names are. Where is was and so on. BSA and Cub Scouts don't need this type of behavior.

I was a Cub Master for many years and understand the rules. If I can help, I will.

I have three boys in Boy Scouts new. (Just back from a camping trip.) Over the years I have found that Scouts is what you make it.

Let me know. I will help.

jd i have never had the privilage of being a part of scouts, but that is absolutely unsafe. i think there are those here that would send a complaint to District Excutive via email, just post the email, i will certainly send one, these kids eyes and possibly there lives are at stake, someone needs to protect them, if the instructors don't know better the kids certainly won't. good luck, you will look like the hero after everything is straightened out. prayers are needed for GODS intervention.

I had a similar thing happen with the 4=H shooting with my kid. He made some arrows and they were down graded because they said the feathers were not straight. I explained that they were looking at helical fletching, the guy turned around and asked his friend if the feathers were supposed to be straight and he said probably. Next was the shooting competition where at the end the winner of traditional bows had to shoot against the winner of the compound bows. Any kind of interjection was fround upon. There was more to it than that, but you know how it is.
