I've recently experienced a retinal detachment and my vision is now very poor. Surgery was performed and was somewhat successful although it would have been much better if done earlier.
IF,  you start seeing excessive "floaters", especially if they are dark in color go to the doctor IMMEDIATELY.  Once the retina starts to detach it can go south pretty quickly.  I procrastinated....big mistake.

Doug, I detached my retina back in 2002 as a result of striking my head. I unfortunately had to have 4 surgeries due to complications after the first surgery. While the retina is reattached my vision in my right eye is 20/400 . BUT DO NOT DISPARE....I still shoot right handed and though my depth perception isn't what it was I'm still shooting comfortably out to 25 yards. It takes work but its doable. Fred

Thanks Fred for relating your experience. Hopefully mine will turn out well.  I'm a little disappointed that they moved the topic though.  the main reason I posted was to warn all about the symptom so others don't make the same mistake I did.

More than half of us will experience shrinkage of the vitreous, which pulls away from the retina as it shrinks. I was lucky- mine separated without detaching the retina, but I had to go in for checkups every few months for a couple of years. Those big floaters are spooky!

Thanks for the reminder. Mine started coming loose several years ago but fortunately it stayed attached & just stretched a bit. I need to get in to my eye Dr. to have things checked again. Praying for God's hand of healing.

Doug, I've had 4 detachments. One in the right eye and 3 in the left. 1998, 1999, 2000 and then the last one was in 2002.

Don't get discouraged. In time your vision will probably improve and you'll adjust. Maybe not 20/20 again in that eye but with glasses and a few prescription changes in 6 month intervals, you'll be surprised at how things will work out.

Best wishes - I know what you're going through. Keep your chin up.
