Anyone Ever Have This?
« on: May 12, 2013, 07:52:00 PM »
I overdid it at a workout about a month ago and wound up with something called rhabdomyolosis or rhabdo for short. It's caused by ruptures in the muscle membranes that release myoglobin into the bloodstream and can cause kidney failure in extreme cases. I wouldn't have even known I had it except for the trusty internet. A couple of blood tests later and a trip to the emergency room and my muscle enzymes were trending back down with no damage to the kidneys or liver.

The problem is the recovery. No upper body exercise for six to eight weeks and then baby steps back after that. I'm talking two pound curls, not twelve ounce, and 3 to 5 pushups to start. I'm concerned about the long term for archery as I can't even think about pulling one of my bows for at least two to three more months. I may also have something called compartmentalization that is causing some serious arm cramps now but that should go away.

If anyone has dealt with this, I would be interested in hearing about the recovery process. Thanks.

John

Praying for wisdom and healing

Thanks. It's not as bad as it could have been and the worst is over but it's definitely a major setback. And I never heard of it either. The ER doctor had seen it but the general practitioner was not very familiar. Rheumatologist and Sports medicine specialist turned out to be the way to go.

Thanks for the prayer.

Sounds like you really dodged a bullet there, John.

Never heard of it, but do understand the baby step PT to get back...it's brain numbing to do stuff when it seems it's so piddly it's not helping.

Trust the medicos and PT's to guide you. I did and ended up back from some nasty stuff that had me where I didn't know if I'd ever do the things I love.

Prayers for patience and healing!

John,
Sorry to hear this as well but most the people I know on here only lift a "fork" most the time...
What muscle tissue do you think you tore?
Reason I ask this is because I get a cramp on my right side under my ribs/stomach area every once in a while when I turn or strain  leaning to work on something and it feels like a Charlie horse and I have to stretch my whole body till the cramp calms down...
A few weeks ago I was under a house sweating a valve on and leaning on a slight angle on my back and "Bam" my friend thought I was having a heart attack by the way I was squirmming under the house ...I am still a bit sore from it ...I never had lifted weights much other then my 265# rear but as we age we seem to put more wear and tear on our old body's...
I hope you get healed but keep us imformed as to what actually has happened!
I pray for a quick healing for ya...God Bless...

Keefer,

I ruptured the muscle membranes in both arms, mostly the forearms it seems, from doing assisted pull ups for ten minutes in a strength conditioning class at a local gym. Basically tore open the sheaths that encase the muscle tissue. Caused by overexertion on that muscle group. Never even knew you could do it. Kind of like having a bunch of internal cuts I guess. Main concern now is scar tissue, nerve damage and recovery. Not sure how it will affect my strength in the long run.

I'm no doctor but what you have sounds like a pulled or torn muscle. Maybe an oblique? See a doctor if you haven't already. Don't ignore it. Pains like that need to get checked. Let me know what you find out and I wish you a speedy recovery as well.

I read this before I left for the B'mo shoot and reading it again still makes my stomach do flips...

I too did NOT need to know that you can tear the sheath surrounding a section of muscle fibers and expose the muscle tissue... God's design of our bodies is nothing short of amazing... and all that we can do to our environment to upset that delicate mechanism... and apparently in the pursuit of improved strength as well.

Like I needed MORE reasons to NOT like exercise!

Prayers continue for healing and full use of those arms and ability to shoot bows!
