Broke my arm today...
« on: June 13, 2013, 11:23:00 PM »
Never thought it would happen to me. I was riding my bike home from work and something locked up. I don't really know what happened, except my bike crashed and I went over the handle bars. Luckily my awesome wife forces me to wear a helmet, as I hit my head hard enough to cause me to see stars. After a trip to the emergency room, I learned that my fears were confirmed and I broke my elbow... Looks like I won't be shooting for a while. Any advice on rehab for my broken elbow, after it heals a bit first of course. I'm worried that I won't be able to get back into shape in time for bow season.    :help:

Slow healing part of the body!  My wife broke hers and knocked the fat pads all out of whack a little over 2 months ago and still cannot straighten her arm.  Doc says they take time to heal.  Glad you had your helmet on as it could have ended much worse!  Don't push it and good luck!

Well luckily I've got until the end of october before my first opportunity to hunt. I shoot a light bow so God willing I will be able to get my arm better and ready to hunt by then. I love hunting so much that if I'm not able I will hunt with dare I say it... a rifle.

How awful!  It's amazing how quickly you can go down on a bike and how hard you can hit.  We had a multi-bike wreck a couple years ago in triathalon traing and had a couple athletes with a broken pelvis and shoulder.  I was lucky and avoided it, but man, it happened so fast.

Hope you heal quickly and well, and can be back at it by bow season.

Bill

Wow man...sorry that happened to you.  I have had a hip replacement way too young.  And the guys that work for me are constantly breaking something.  We all agree on one thing...sign up for professional rehab, go to every class, and then do more at home.  You want to get your strength and mobility back as soon as possible.  The longer you wait the harder it will be.
I wish you good luck!

Whatever you do, clear any exercise you do to try to get back into shooting shape with your doc. It's amazing how many people make injuries worse by doing too much too soon.

Just take two tums and keep on shooting you will get used to the small amont of pain.    Do what the doc says and like others said get therapy as soon as your doc says.

My hunting partner broke his wrist one year. He fixed his cast so he could shoot. It hurt each time he shot. He shot the biggest deer of his life that year.
I had bicep tendonitis one year. I should have slowed down my shooting. It would have healed faster. I continued to shoot and also shot the biggest deer I have ever killed that year. It took five years to heal completely.
If I had it to do over I would probably quit shooting and let it heal. It would have been easier to live with. Gary

Healing advice is best that comes from your professional team of PT's.

The one common thread above is to do what your told...do no more, and do what you're to do as much as your told to do. No short cuts!

The human body is amazing in how it can heal...if done properly.

Prayers for full healing and a quick recovery, but using one's arm is so important, passing on shooting for a while, is small taters!

I shoot with an arm that can't fully extend, so it's possible, but I was born that way.

Take it from someone who went over the handlebars and sustained a LOT more injuries than you-listen to your doctors, do your rehab, and talk to them about bowhunting.  Some might want you drawing the bow for rehab.
