I like to rattle when I arrive, and right before I leave.  Maybe once inbetween on a short hunt. Every buck I have sighted and I know for sure heard the antlers has responded.  The unseen deer I dont know about.  All the mature deer come right in, but usually try to circle.  Immature deer sometime take their sweet time coming in for fear I believe.  It is impreative that you are REALLY ready when you rattle.  I have had them in my lap in just a few seconds!
Im sure there have been deer that didnt respond, but Im not sure they are sharp enough to get leary if they hear it more than once.  Out side of November they seem to respond a little slower. Goodluck!

I have really good luck after the Rut and early Dec. ( Season is over after the first week of Dec. where I live) I really believe there are more Bucks around than does! I only rattle a short time, at most half a minute. Any longer and I think a Buck close by can pin point your stand. I rattle every half hour or so when I think they may be on the move. I also try to set up where they can't circle downwind with out going out into an opening where I can see them. Try to be in the thick stuff so it's hard for them to see. Hilly terrain is good too where they have to come up to your stand from a low area. Good Luck!
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Little before, then little right before you leave.
Yea,though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death,i will fear no evil:for thou art with me;thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.Psalm 23:4
