What to hunt?

It is a shame! I was hunting in Zim in sept. Its a great place. Saw many elephants. Some great sable and kudu. Herds of buffalo. All the local people I met were very friendly. Vitoria falls is a wonderful place! I hope they can get rid of their leadership problems. But when that happens it still will take allot of work to get them back on their feet. I was told most of the taken farms are not running and many of the farmers who ran them have left the country. If I ever get the $ and my PH says its Ok ill be back for a cat someday. i only hope there is a place left to hunt.

Its a tough situation there, super cheap hunts for animals like buffalo and sable, both of which I would dearly like to go there for and I hate to see outfitters and PH's there losing out, because of the corrupt government, but if you go there, some of your money is going to Mugabe and his cronies. Don't get me wrong, guys.  Zim used to be great place....especially when it was still called Rhodesia!  Mugabe and his chronies have ruined it.  

The big problem, as I see it, is that he is ENCOURAGING his people to TAKE farms.  Farmers have been murdered...after being forced to watch their wives gang raped by dozens of blacks.  This is fact, NOT fiction.  You don't hear too much about it, unless you are there.  

There is nothing to stop some kid with a club, panga, or AK47 from taking you out.  He will never be punished for such a crime.  It will only be a matter of time before we read about the first white hunter being killed there.

I, for one, am not willing to take the risk just to save some money on trophy fees.  I figure I have at least another 20 good years of bowhunting and will do nothing stupid to shorten that time.

If, and when, Zim is again safe and the game has come back, I'll be delighted to hunt there.

I don't know enough about the political issues in Zimbabwe to comment other than the fact that the people (black and white) are being robbed by magumbe sp?

It makes me sick to think I might never return to Humani. I was blessed to hunt there three times and it will always be part of who I am.

when i was looking at Africa nad thought i could save enough to get there i signed up for news email from Zim . don't know where it is sent from can't see Mugabe allowing it to be sent out . pretty scary stuff . last week there was a piece on elephants leaving Zim and moving across the river to Zambia because of hunting pressure on the zim side . now they are destoying the habitat in Zambia.
starvation is hitting the people very hard right now and inflation is 600% this year alone .-- herb

Lots of good advice here. Don't go with a menu. Don't look to RSA for a sable. Don't think about Big-5 species on your first trip. Don't plan on going to Africa just once! The rest is up to you, but I can tell you the four plains game animals I would go back to hunt over and over again: kudu, wart hog, bush pig and bush buck. Cheeers, Don
