A Few "Africa" Questions
« on: October 13, 2004, 04:37:00 AM »
Hello,

Bowhunting in Africa has been a dream of mine, and it looks like next year it is going to happen.  I've been doing a lot of online research, and it is hard just picking which country to hunt in.  I would be interested in hearing from those of you who have had multiple African hunts in various places, and hearing which was your favorite and why.  Any particular outfitter recommendations?  Finally, I've also started to look into the various takedown longbow options for my new Africa bow; what are the minimum and recommended draw weights for hunting plains animals?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hawken-I have hunted both RSA and Namibia, but prefer Namibia. My favorite outfitter is Allan Cilliers with Ha Nore Safaris. Having booked both ways, I would recommend a booking agent like Bowhunting Safari Consultants especially for your first hunt. You will find the "red tape" is taken care of for you and you have a great source for answering any questions which come up. As for bow weights, I have seen hunters with 50# bows and I have used 58# and 63# recurves, but I would recomment as heavy as you find comfortable with heavy arrows and 2-blade cut-on-contact heads. You should not have any objections from your outfitter with this combo.

Like Jimmy, who has shared a camp with me, I have hunted both South Africa and Namibia.  I went to Ha Nore in July just as Jimmy was leaving.  I'm going back...

I have hunted Greater Kuduland safaris in South Africa 11 times.  I'm headed back next year for number 12.  For your first hunt, I would recommend Greater Kuduland.  I think you'll see more game and have more shot opportunities.  You would certainly have many more species available.

I've been posting here looking for hunters to join me there.  I'm NOT a booking agent, so there is no gain for me.  It's just a great place to hunt.

Hopefully, more hunters who have been over to Africa will post for you.

I really appreciate the information gentlemen.  It's nice to have some recommended places to start focusing my attention on.

I'm glad you translated the ?Latin at the bottom of your post.  I sure was nervous about giving advice to some dude named "Aude Aliquid Dignum".  Gawd, what a moniker to have to bear throughout your life!

Hawkin-Paul makes a good point about species avaliability. I would suggest that you determine the 4 or 5 top species you are interested in and choose a place which gives you the best opportunity for these animals. All species will not be found in every location or in huntable numbers in some locations.

(Paul-look for an e-mail in 3 weeks concerning Carolyn)
