Ian,

I'm leaving in 18 days for SA. I'll be working for my uncle on his Safari Operation, and hunting in my free time. I'll be in SA for a total of 2 months, of which I will be on the ranch for 7 weeks!
I'm taking 2 bows with me -

54" Windauer Wolverine Longbow 68# @ 27"
58" Harold Couch Custom Longbow 64# @ 27"

I'm taking a dozen Magnus Snuffers and 18 Zwickey Eskimos, both are 125g glue ons that have a 125g broadhead adapters glued in.
I'm taking 28 Carbon Express Terminator Select Arrows cut to 28" with 4 x 4" banana feathers (I would have preferred Heritage shafts, but I had these and didn't want to waste!     :D     ). My arrows come to a total weight of about 610g and 21.4% FOC...
I'm planning to use Ace Hex heads on flu-flus for Doves and Francolin, then I'm going to use broadheads on everything else from Guinea Fowl up....

I was born in Zimbabwe, and started hunting there when I was 5. So if there's any advice or info you'd like to know, feel free to ask away mate!     :D
I've read that you're going out to SA next year! It's an awesome experience, and one you will never forget! Good luck with that!

Hi Nigel, whereabouts in SA is your uncle's place? I am based in JHB now for my sins but have worked far and wide in safari industry. We are also counting down 20 days to go for us, then its up to north west Limpopo for a week, 5 ks from Bots border on the Matlabas river. The fabled old hunting grounds! Eland and most everything down in size from there    :D
I will be shooting 54#@28 RD Timberpoint longbow, made by a local mate of mine( Jaco Wessels current no 2 field hunter round champion). 590gr chundoo shafts with either Ace 125s or grizzly 160s 3x5" helical. They go at about 160fps. Also taking plenty of flu flus and blunts for francolin etc and my own rd longbow 56# @28as back up.

It will be the last quarter of the moon so we will have nice dark evenings and early starts in the morning.

Cheers,
chrisg

I will be hunting in Namibia in August with a 60# at 28 Wapiti TD (Keith Chastain).  I will be shooting 30 inch Easton Axis Obsession 340's with brass insert and 3 grain per inch weight tube and 150 Silver Flames and 145 Wensel Woodsmans.  The arrows are fletched with 5 inch parobolic helicals.  This will give me a total arrow weight of about 680 grains and an FOC of about 17 1/2 %!

I wish the Foc was a little higher but thees arrow are flying great and the weight is good so at this time I am not going to mess with a good thing.

Good luck to all going to Africa this year!!!
May all your blood trails be short!

I shot a 50 lb. Wes Wallace with a 550 gr. Blackhawk carbonwood arrow.  I had a 125 gr. Stinger Buzz Cut on the end.  I shot clean through a Kudu and a Red Hartebeest.  I dropped a Gemsbok in his tracks..

I used a 65# widow longbow, 350 Heritage shafts and 3 blade Razorcaps, 125gr
Killed 7 animals with 7 shots, only one went out of sight before going down. 4 passthrus and 3 opposite shoulders.
Shot placement is key as always.

When I went in 2005 I was shooting a 64# Robertson Gozhawk, breast tapered and footed hexpines with Zephyr Sausquatch broadheads, 1 with a Doug Campbell damascus broadhead, and 1 Axis arrow with a magnus 1 broadhead on it.  All of my arrows were running 680-720 grains.  I also had two shafts with stone points on them, 1 rivercane and 1 ash.  Unfortunately I missed both shots that I took with those.  Shot 6 animals and the only one that didn't have the BH hanging out the oppisite side was the Eland and it went through the ribcage and into the oppisite shoulder.  Joseph

Here's my arsenal:

El Cheapo the homemade longbow - 50# at 29 shooting 670 grain GTs with wild turkey fletch and 150 gr Grizzlies with Ashby grind.  Also 100 gr brass inserts and 100 glue-ons for 350 grains up front.

Backup 52#@29 ChekMate Hunter I with same arrows but total of 300 up front with Magnus I on the pointy end.
