South Africa In June

Heading to South Africa for plains game in June with a 52" / 50#@27 Toelke recurve with either eclipse  or Abowyer heads on cx 90 shafts cut to 28", total weight is 500 grains. I have been trying different shaft and broadhead weight combinations trying to get up around 600 grains and while some fly OK none seem to fly as good as the 500 gr setup. My question to you who have been there is will this setup be sufficient or do I need to consider a heavier bow?
Any suggestions are greatly Appreciated.

your setup sounds Fine for plains game, take high percentage shots within your limits and you'l have no trouble at all.

where about are you going? whats on the list of animals you want?

We are hunting in the eastern cape area with blaaukrantz safaris.My father has rifle hunted there several times and my son graduates high school in May so he suggested that we take him there as a graduation gift. I think it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the three of us to make this hunt.My son rifle hunts and he wants a Kudu, Impala and maybe a Blue Wildebeast so I will film him til he is finished then he will film me after that. They mainly rifle hunt there however Our PH is an avid bowhunter and says we should have plenty of opportunity for a few animals for myself. I am mainly after a Kudu however I wont pass on any opportunities at other species.

I went last year with a bw psa 52 at 28 and I generally draw 27 1/2 to 27 with 540 grain 35-55 gold tips.  I did okay with a warthog, impala and kudu but never got a pass through on any of them.  I'm going back in 2010 with a bob lee 50 lb. and 600 55-75 grain goldtips ( 300 upfront).  You may not get the penetration of a 60 lb.  bow with 700 grain arrows but if you are careful with shot placement and keep your shots under 20, you should do well.  It was my impression and experience that the kudu was not as tough as many of the other animals.  I was more amazed by the warthogs and impala.  They will jump your string and laugh while they are doing it.  They are also very tough once hit even with a decent shot.  My impala ran over 400 yards with a good old double lung shot.  No one told him that he was supposed to die faster. Last thing, enjoy yourself and enjoy the hunt.  I was so concerned about penetration, doing this right, getting that animal and so on that I forgot to just breath and soak in Africa.  You will have a blast.   Bhill
