Headed to Africa for a honeymoon!
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:40:00 PM »
I just got married and I got the coolest wife ever!  She does not hunt, but enjoys hunting with me....especially turkey hunting. I kinda threw out the idea of going to Africa for a honeymoon and she JUMPED on it!  We are headed back to Vissers for her first African adventure and my 3rd.  She is even warming up to my financing strategy....you know....go now...figure out how to pay for it later!  We leave this Sept. 1st.  I hit the jackpot!

That's cool! I just took my non-hunting wife to Africa last month and she had a ball. She said she would do it again in a heartbeat.

Congrats,

Congrats!  I have a blood thirsty cool wife and it makes life really fun!       The only downside is that hunting trips become twice as exspensive but that is a small price to pay for being able to enjoy the 2 greatest loves of your life at the same time!

The group I'm going with to Africa started with all 5 wives.  We are down to one going now.  Once one wife dropped out, they started dropping like flies.  Mostly they didn't want to stay away for two weeks (kids and stuff) and we didn't want them flying alone if they only came for a week.  Once you guys have kids it definitely makes these types of trips tough-so it's good that you are taking advantage now.  Have a great adventure.

My non-hunting wife went to Africa with me 3 years ago on her first trip and my third. Before the hunt was over we had her shooting guinea fowl and then an impala. She loved it and came home a hunter! Last August she was going back to Africa as the main hunter, but had to stay home at the absolutely last minute (we were on our way to the airport to leave) when she found out her father would probably die in the next few days. I booked another hunt for her this year and she had a great time as the hunter who shot all the big game we took. Now she is a full-fledged international big game hunter!

As an aside to Paul (Horne Shooter) -- I would not let the issue of the women traveling "alone" get in the way. The best thing would be to have them only go for a shorter time but to travel together. The main thing is to have them traveling without any weapons and to arrange for people to drop them off and pick them up on either end of the trip. The first time my wife went to Africa, I found out the day before we were leaving that her passport had expired. We thought it was the same as mine, but we were wrong and didn't check ahead of time. I flew with her from Oklahoma City to Houston, took her to the offices of a passport service to help smooth the way through the process, showed her where the passport office was, rearranged her flights for a day later, dropped her off at a hotel, flew back to Oklahoma City, packed up all my kids' and my stuff, and took off for Africa early the following morning. She got her passport the next day, flew home, packed, and then got on the plane a day later. When my kids and I got to Africa, we spent the night, then I sent my kids off to the hunting camp with our PH and arranged a charter flight for my wife and me to arrive at camp just a few hours later than the rest of the group who had made the long drive. I picked up my wife at the airport when she arrived, took her bags over to the charter plane, and we flew to camp. Although it was a huge hassle, cost me a bunch of money, and we were all terribly stressed by the whole ordeal, my wife said that the flight over by herself was the best part because she could relax and had no responsibilities for anyone or anything except changing planes a couple of times along the way. That was way easier than her usual responsibilities of taking care of her family!

So, if my wife could make it over to Africa alone, the wives of you and your hunting buddies could easily travel together. They would probably enjoy the travel more as a "hens' club" that having to put up with all the testosterone anyway.    :D  So don't let the worry about your wives traveling without the men keep them from going along, even if one of them backs out. I guarantee you that the women will enjoy Africa as much or more than the men will. Part of that is getting away from family obligations and all the pressures they have at home, and another part is getting to share experiences that women typically do not ever get to have but almost always love.

Oh, I forgot to say -- Jon, congratulations on your marriage, your neat wife-to-be, your wonderful honeymoon, and your future life together as a hunting couple. After almost 30 years of marriage I can definitely say that you need to share as much together as possible to keep your marriage strong and thriving. You are off to a very good start! Have fun and bring back trophies, pictures, and most importantly, great memories!
