South Africa here i come....
« on: August 21, 2009, 04:48:00 PM »
Well finally here I am, 24 hours away from starting my African adventure... My self and Ronny (Margly on here) will be leaving Norway saturday night / sunday morning to join my friends from the British Bowhunters Association for 14 days of bowhunting in South Africa, north west of Thabazimbi....
I am taking my Black Widow psaII and will be flinging 340 easton fmj shafts with 75 grain brass inserts and 125 grain silver flames.
I have also another string with nock point set up for wooden arrows and xx75 2216s for small game etc...
(I will also be taking my Hoyt Alphamax but I will try not to mention that again   )
To say I am looking forward to this is an understatement..
Watch this space for a full report with masses of photos when we get back on the 7th of september...

Nathan,

Have a great hunt and don't worry about that other really ugly bow you stuffed in your luggage. This comes from someone who's been there, where you're going with different equipment choices,.... twice.... Hopefully this won't get pulled!

Bowhunting Africa is a fun, great and for many a once in a lifetime experience no matter the equipment so don't think you're less of a man if you shoot the wheels. The important thing is that you shoot good arrows and kill the game cleanly with the equipment that best fits the situation (mental, ability, physical, etc) in front of the hunter. For the love of the game please don't feel the need to shoot the bow you aren't confident in because you think you need to prove something. Shoot the equipment you're most confident in executing a perfect shot with. Different situations call for different equipment so you should shoot the bow that's best for you in that situation and that bow can vary regardless of how good you are. This applies to all bows and if I shoot a 64" longbow better than a 60" longbow you can bet I'm taking the 64" bow with me even though I know the shorter bow might be better in a tight situation.

Have a great hunt, shoot straight and come home safe!
One man thinks he can, the other doesn't. Both are right!

No problem  :)  I wont feel any less of a man shooting my compound :)I am taking both bows because I
I love shooting both bows, and I am just as confident with my widow as I am with my compound at my maximum hunting distance with each bow... that that is not the same as the max distance I can hit a target at with each bow...
and it changes depending on the situation, the weather and the type of game in front of me..

15 hours until I start the drive to the airport!

Good luck Nathan, and say hello to John and the rest of the guys for me.

This is going to be a special hunt,  with good friends, in body and in spirit.
Hunting was hazardous, but at least it guaranteed the freedom of the individual.

There is no doubt that the onset of farming saw the end of leasure for the majority of people, who were destined to toil in the fields.

Thanks, I will say hi to the lads yes.. they are in the air already... they are a day ahead of us, I had to delay due to a wedding shoot today, but Ive still got 14 days to look forward too:)

Yes, a very special hunt indeed, Clive will be sorely missed on this trip, but I am sure he will be with us in spirit.

For those that do not know, Clive Freemantle the president of the BBA (British Bowhunters Association) passed away after a long battle with cancer. He missed the trip by three week. He was a good friend and will be missed, especially as Clive first tried to get me to join him in Africa way back in the 90s... Finally we would get to hunt Africa together, but it was not to be...

Anyway I am packed and ready "only" 12 kilos over weight on th e measly 20 kilo allowance and just about to start the drive to the airport....
Standby for a full report on our return  :)

Good luck! If you have not done this before you are in for the bowhunting experience of a lifetime.

Last time I went (1996) I was shooting a compound.  Excellent time.  This trip (Sept 8th) I'll have two longbows instead.  You'll have a great trip no matter what you shoot...just have fun!
