Hi!
I`ve been discussing a lot about the best set up for African game and I`m wondering: What is your African set up?    :campfire:

Hi!
I am going in the end july for a 10 days hint at Letsatsi Safari, near Thabazimbi. I was there in august 09 as well and been longing to go back ever since I left  :)
It is something about Africa, when u have got it under your skin, u really never leave  :)

by the way I liked your setup.

When I was there in august I did bring a longbow in 56@28 and a Black Widow PMA in 50@28 and did feel that the BW was to light for the African game, so this time I'll be on the safe side:)

63-66lbs at 30 inches draw is going to be Very good! the longer draw will really help.
What do you think your finished arrow weight will be?

60" Super Shrew Samurai takedown 68#@29.5"

Arrow Dynamics Hammerhead Trads: First set - 31", 100 gn brass inserts with additional 70 gn screw-in weight, aluminum collar at point end, uni-bushing and g-nock, 4 x 4" LW fletching at 90 degrees, ABS Ashby 315 gn left single bevel broadheads, total weight 915 gn. Second set - same arrow set up but without the additional 70 gn screw-in weight, total weight 840 gn.

Eagle Flight Archery bow quiver. Safari Tuff Arrowmaster quiver.

If I were not going to try to shoot larger game like buffalo or eland, I would bring a bow that would be about 56-58#@29.5", arrows that would be in the 750 gn range, and broadheads that didn't necessarily cost $30 each. I don't mind shooting the heavier, more expensive equipment, but going a little lighter makes everything easier and lets me practice with it more.

nice and hard hitting setups. Is any one going to use a self bow and wooden arrows? There must be someone!  :)

Where in Limpopo are you going to be Andy? We are having a summer of massive rainstorms in Gauteng and more coming.

Hi Allan!

The Super Shrew in [email protected] AMO 60" was a heavy set up  :D

Have you tested the heavy set ups in a chrono?

Rain? only an inch or two yesterday haha. The city streets have lots of fallen leaves from hail. Perhaps we all should have a croc set up in our quiver! Up there I am not sure if it's that much rain. Last Jan we were on north side of Waterberg -Sterkrivier, 'Potties' area and plenty of big storms up there; this year seems no different.
I am going to use a 55# boo backed IPE r/d longbow with 495gr eastons 600 tipped with grizzly 160s and weedeater line inside. These are light and thin but I am after 'bite sized game'  :)
Also shoot a heavier wooden shaft comes out near 600gr also tipped with 160 grizzlies or Ace bh. Shoot them from IPE or 54# r/dglass longbow. They chug out of there at 164fps. Very quiet arrows.

Margly,

No, I haven't put the heavy arrows through a chronograph. One thing I did notice was how well the velocity seemed to hold up out to 40 yards. Based on my study of exterior ballistics in bullets, I would suppose the the ballistic coefficient of those heavy arrows would be extremely high and that velocity would not diminish too quickly over moderate distances, like up to 50 yards. Of course, because the arrows are heavy to begin with, initial velocity is going to be significantly less than with lighter arrows, so drop will tend to be greater, especially in the first 25 yards. The drop at 40 yards actually did not seem to be much different between my heavier arrows and some of my arrows that were 150 grains lighter. But then I don't shoot at big game animals out at 40 yards either.

Allan!
I had the same experience with my arrows.
I tested them out to ca 35 yards today with a Habu cs3 recurve 63@30.
The difference in fps was not big from the lightest 685 grain to the heaviest 755 grain arrows. The lightest had a fps of 174 and the heaviest ad 167 fps. But out on 35 yards it made a difference in both aiming and drop.
But the penetration was slightly better with the heavy set up(also heavier up front). I did shoot at a Ethafoam Target and a 3D deer.

By the way I think my kill zone would be out to max. 20 yards. It is going to be fun testing out with the bows when they arrive:D

When I went with Andy last year I took 2 bows, a Horne Longbow drawing 63#@30" & my Morrison Cheyenne of the same weight. Arrows were Beman MFX 340s loaded up with 350 at the front for a total weight of arund 700gn. Had complete pass-throughs on everything I shot & would've had no concerns whatsoever if an Eland had presented itself (it didn't)

You'll be definately good to go Margly

Incedentally, could you please let me have the specs of your Border (riser length, limb length, OAL length etc...) PM me if you wish! I've been wanting to get Sid to build me a bow for about 4 years but he's allways either been put off by my 30" draw or tried talking me into a 68"+ bow when I'm really wanting to stay around 64" max.
Thanks! Oh & if fo anyreason you don't like it when you get it....you got my number  ;)

Hi Robtattoo!

The specs is as follows:
Riser: The new triple carbon spine Swift riser with Buffalo horn overlay, finger grooves, stab insert, quiver insert.
The wood is Shedua and Heritage Midnight.  :bigsmyl:
(I did see the wood combo on Sid`s triple carbon spine riser and it was awesome)

Limbs: Hex V H core 66@30 with autumn leaf pattern on the belly.

Total length of the bow is 64"

Hope that would help!

And yes I`ll be in touch if I don`t like it  :biglaugh:

Hi Margly,

Mate have you hunted with Benito? I'm sure it's the same fella but two close aussie mates of mine hunted with him a few years ago.

Hi Al!
Yes I was hunting at Letsatsi Safari, that is the new place for Babs & Benito, after they sold the old farm.
Big place and lot of animals many of them in the Rowland Ward category. Babs & Benito is very friendly people to visit. They made me feel like an old friend from the moment they picked me up at the airport.
I`m going back on a hunt coming July  :D

If you ever should consider going to SA, I think this place is one of the best

Yes mate, from what I've been told hunting with Benito is something else. I plan to make it there one year soon.

Cheers mate,

Agree, Babs and Benito are great hosts, I also had a great hunt with them. Lowveld is big and wild, lots of hunting heritage there.
