Rawhide?
« on: December 27, 2007, 08:38:00 PM »
I've always been intrigued with handle wraps, knife sheaths, and various things made with rawhide.  I'm thinking of replacing the leather wrap on my longbow with rawhide, if I can learn how to do it.  I'm curious if others have photos of their rawhide products and know of any craftsman who work with rawhide.

Bob,
I have actually thought about a rawhide wrapped handle for a knife with the stiches to help with the grip. I've seen Jerry Lairson do some nice rawhide work. Not sure of his email so here is his web link. Lin

Jeff,
Do you have any photos of his work you could post?

Lin,
I didn't see any photos on Jerry's site, but I have seen a few of Daniel Winkler's wrapped in Rawhide.  On the right knife it looks great.  The sheath that comes with the knife you ordered was amazing, and I was wondering what could be done with quivers and wraps etc.

I believe the only limit is your imagination. It's a whole craft in itself. Jerry uses rawhide in some of his African projects. I've seen them and he knows his stuff.
The sheath your talking about is from Argentina and is colt hide.
You can buy the materials cheap at the pet section. (doggie chews)Just soak in water and work it. Stinks to high heaven though. You can do a search and read a little and you can do it. The dog will run off with it, if your not too careful.
