Shooting lefty

I am shooting lefty for a while due to my shoulder needing surgery. I am OK but not great. I was wondering for the guys who have shot opposite handed, what is the biggest cause for bad groups. I think for me it dropping my bow arm. I can keep 5 out of 5 on a paper plate at 10 yards, but at 15 every thing wants to go right. I can keep 3 out of 5 on the plate at that distance. Thanks! Shawn

I am right handed so at first I shot that way.  After a month of frustration I found out the importance of eye dominance and have shot left handed ever since.  You might have to close one eye for awhile just to train it up.

I am right too but need to shoot lefty. It seems morwe of a form issue for me. Shawn

Shawn if you are right eye dominate shooting left handed and your groups are staying right then try closing your right eye and shooting with just one eye open. Or at least keep your right closed while drawing so your left eye can take over and then open both right before your release.

I have tried that, it makles no difference. I shot some more and I think I figured it out. I am definitely dropping my right arm and it swings out and down so low right hits. I really concentrated on keeping it up and on target until the arrow hit and not plucking the string and I can now hit the papr plate pretty much every time at 12-15 yards. Shawn

I did that about 10 years ago with my other bow, let it come to you. It'll take a while for the muscles to develop. You can train yourself to do it, it just feels way wrong at first. IMO the muscular stuff is the hardest part of it, good form is already in your head. But if you're working on form, it's probably the elbow drop or the dreaded "peeking". I have that problem ocassionaly also. I have to make sure to keep a rock solid bow arm.

Shawn, if you are getting hits to the right, I'd say your bow arm is drifting on release. I piddled around shooting righthanded a couple of times and I tended to get groups to the left. Pushing toward the target is natural for me when I shoot lefty (it should be easy, as I have been a lefty for 52 years!). Really concentrate on locking in the bow arm and pushing thru the shot and the groups will come over for you! Good Luck! Mike

Mike, right on. I have been shooting in the house at 13 yards(sit on back of couch-out thru family room into kitchen)and my arm was drifting. I feel I could kill a deer at 15 yards or less thi sway and I have only been shooting since 4pm. today. Shawn

I know for me the two biggest culprits for arrows to the right are plucking and not following through after the shot.

Jim, I may be able too but for now I am lefty. My shoulder is not good, lots of junk to be cleaned out, no tears that were seen on the MRI but Doc said he has to get in there to be sure. Shawn
