Anyone try the moultrie digital?
« on: February 11, 2007, 07:08:00 PM »
My wife got me one for a present.  It's digital, cost about $150, and takes those big 6 volt square batteries.  It says average battery life is about 20 days, and I have tried 2 different types of batteries, and neither one has lasted the 4 days I set the camera out!  I had the camera set up by a gutpile, and I know animals visited it, but I got no pictures.  The only pictures I got were of me setting it up.  Has anyone else tried this camera?  If so, what am I doing wrong?

Sometimes you can set the camera to high off the ground to catch movement. If your camera has the infared beam aiming you will be amazed at where its aimed verses where it looks like its pointed. I have a Moultrie 2.1 and it was my first camera so I dont have much to compare to. I have found a few things out this year. Face the camera away from the sun if you can. The sun can cause false triggers. Invest in a rechargable type 6v battery other wise you will go broke buying them. Also look into the solar charger for the same battery. If your buying batteries for now buy the cheapest ones you can find they seem to last just as long. The moultrie has a slow trigger so try to put it looking down the trail instead of across it or use something to stop the animal in a certain area.
I usaualy get about 7-10 days in warm weather 50-60 degree with a regular battery.

I have a moultree 2.1, and I love it.  Like Doug said, I use the rechargeable batteries.  Bought two batteries and a charger, so I take a fresh battery to the woods ever time.
I have had the camera take 75 photos in one week with the battery still running.  So you may have a problem.
Mine takes great photos.
Once you have it running right, buy a 2nd memory card, so you can swap it out every time as well.
Doug had some good suggestions.

i have 4 of the 2.1's and they work pretty well. i had 1 camera capture 219 images in 5 days. images were of deer, raccoons, squirrels and even an owl. i was using the 6v rayovak batteries from walmart. i think i paid about $3. each. i also bought 250g media cards.

when setting up the cameras i used a piece of cardboard that i painted black (approx 2'x2' in size) to find out where the red infared beam was pointed.

I have the 3.1 and the first time I set it out, it worked flawlessly, but the second time, I only got pics of me setting it up.  I even tested the aim on the infared and it was right at the bait.  still do not understand it.  I set out for one week the frst time and one week the second time, and still have 76% of the battery left, at least that is what the digital read out says.  I have not had a chance to set out agian os I am curious to see what happens.

I have the Moultri brand batt and it works good for me, I got the solar charger too, but have not used it yet, when i do I will post again.
