Big Problem!!!!--Help
«
on:
January 13, 2008, 05:46:00 PM »
I was in the garage shooting. And while walking up to the target looked at my bow. I tried to get some pictures but these are the best I could get.
In atleast three places the finish is discolored and there are large cracks running across the bow.
They are all on the bottom limb about half way.
The bow is stored at room temp (63) and the garage is about 50.
What do I do?

Looks like moisture under the finish Mitch. I see it a lot on poly type finish's on firearms. No sure about a cure other than a refinish. Hopefully bow doc, or droptine will chime in. Are they snakeskins applied?

Yeah, better pics would help.I'm betting it's just something in the snakeskin backing and nothing major.

The pictures are pretty fuzzy, it looks like you have snakeskins on the limbs. A lot of guys spray or brush a poly finish over them. And cracks like those shown in the pictures allow moisture to get under the finish. It always turns a milky white color under it. It only looks bad won't hurt otherwise, granted thats the case.

It looks like there are some cracks in the finish. Where these have occured it creates an off colored spot. The cracks dont seem to go into the snake skin.

Appears to be a finish problem. No expert here but you may have redo the skins.

Bummer Mitch. I think it's a finish problem as well. Looks like a bubble under the finish. Someone else might know how to fix it. Sorry I don't.

There was too much finish on it.The finish comes loose from the skin after shooting a lot.The skin not being solid like wood or glass and it comes loose and it cracks like that. You would have to strip it all off and start over.I know thats not what you want to hear but the finish is still stuck to parts of the skin and there is no way to separate it from the skin with out messing it up.When the skin deteriorates even slightly the finish can start to come loose. The finish being loose from the bow while flexing is what causes it ti get the cracks also. When finishing skins you dont need a lot of finish on them like that because thats what can happen.I have seen it happen several times.

The finish is coming loose from the skins, Possible the type finish you used... They can be stripped with paint remover and a brush, you'll probably end up refinishing the whole bow. Take it slow or you will end up replacing the skins too. use Thunderbird finish, the 1st coat very thin.

Thunderbird was the finish used on that bow, and yes the first coat was very thin. I think the problem could be the finish thickness causing it to delam from the skins. Your PM box is full. Send me the bow and I'll refinish or reskin it ...whatever it takes.
