Ohio Bowhunters Assoc. and Crossbows
« on: July 22, 2008, 01:06:00 PM »
I can't believe it!  The OBA may be getting ready to vote on accepting crossbows into their membership.  As most know, the lovely Ohio DOW put the crossbow in Ohio's deer archery season years ago.  Now the OBA thinks that since you can hunt deer with a crossbow, you need to be in the OBA!  I guess someone forgot that the OBA was a "Bowhunting" organization, not a deer hunting organization!  What a mess.  I can see my membership being discontinued, and soon!

I am not a member.  Probably should have joined years ago, just never got around to it.  Since they claim this will bring them membership, I'll make this pledge...  If the OBA gets some sense back and defeats this, I'll join and remain a member for life.  Not only that, I'll bring at least 5 more memberships with me.  If they pass it, I will never join... period.  I will not support an organization willing to cuddle up with the very people numerous other bowhunting organizations across the country are fighting.

This attempt has nothing to do with Ohio hunters and nothing to do with improving the OBA.  The obvious goal of this attempt at changing the by-laws is to create propoganda for use to legalize crossbows in other states.  Crossbow sales are not going to improve in Ohio by changing the OBA. Membership in the OBA overall WILL NOT increase.  Sure, there will be an initial surge of new members but that is only because the crossbow manufacturers will need to show a positive result. It would not surprise me in the least to see a certain manufacturer include an OBA membership with the purchase of a crossbow.

Crossbow users are rarely involved in any attempts at bettering bowhunting.  Most (everyone of them that I know) readily admit they "don't have the time" to practice with a bow. How can you expect they will have time to be useful in a state bowhunting organization?

One more thing for bowhunters...  Quit describing a bow as a "vertical bow".  That term is propoganda created by crossbow manufacturers as a sleazy attempt to equalize their product in the eyes of politicians.  A bow is a bow, whether you shoot it canted, vertical, horizontal, or inverted!  A crossbow is not, and will never be, a bow.

Supposably, a formal drafted proposed amendment to adopt and embrace crossbows will be read on the afternoon of Aug 16 at the OBA State Shoot / Rendevouz at the Claylick Bowhunters in Newark, Ohio - that members will vote on it at a later date.

Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx much,

For those interested, here’s an update of happens at the OBA meeting last Saturday:

Rather than a vote ballet being sent out, there was a show hands to allow the decision on a vote to be put before the Advisory Council to determine if a vote would be detrimental to the organization.

Thirty-something (34, if I remember correctly) to 13 hands to let the Advisory Council take up the issue first.

So basically, we had a vote (show of hands) to have a vote.

If Advisory Council then deems a vote is warranted, voting ballets on the amendment presented will be sent out. The timeline for this decision of a vote is suppose to happen before September 1st, so we should know something within a couple of weeks on the Advisory Council’s decision.

I'm with Molson, been thinking about joining. If crossbows get in, I'm out.

Z-Bone, I hope you guys sign up a lot of new members and send the crossbow folks packing. I can not understand why All bowhunters are not members of their state organizations!   :readit:

Molson and Leatherneck:  I urge you be proactive on this.  Join the OBA now so you can vote and have a voice.  You can't help from the outside and you have no grounds to complain about what happens if you stay there.

2-BIG, I can't understand it either.  Think what could be accomplished if just 10% of a state's bowhunters were members of their state's org.

Don't cut your nose off to spite your face. You guys kill me. A crossbow has a trigger. The people that use wheel bows use a trigger. Stop being so greedy.
