N.Y.S. Sporting License Fee Increase

Last year I bought a "Super Sportsman" License,it cost me $58

(Big&Small Game Hunting,Bow stamp,Muzzleloader stamp,Turkey permit,Fishing,and the opportunity for 2 free Deer managment permits)

This year the price was increased to $99 PLUS a MANDITORY, NON-Refundable $10 "DONATION" for the Deer Managment permits (If you don't get drawn,they keep your money. Even the NYSDEC is calling it a "donation"!!!! I was always taught that "donation" is given voluntarily of your own free will. If it is REQUIRED then it is not a "donation" it is a FEE!!!!!)

As much as it pains me,I could probly live with the increase. (I'm far from rich,but I'm not hurting for money) What is REALLY bothering me is the "manditory donation".....

Personaly, I do not shoot does.I have no problem at all with people shooting does,CONGRATULATIONS & GREAT JOB to everyone who manages to tag one and I am truely happy for them!!!!! I choose to let them walk. It's a personal thing and I will not get into it here. What is really bothering me is this..... DO NOT tell me what I "have" to buy!!!!! If I do not want doe tags,I won't buy them. Save them for the next guy who comes along and want's them. But, DO NOT tell me that I have to purchase something that I absolutely will not use!!!!!  :mad:  

I had actualy contemplated not buying a license this year. However, Last night I gave in..... I bought a Big&Small Game license and a Bowhunting stamp. Total..... $50  I managed to pay less than last year,but considering what got last year and how little I've got this year, I still feel "beaten-up"  :(

Super Sportsman was $68 - not $58 last year with the dmp application included.

It was raised to $88 - not $99 - this year.
To apply for dmp's (doe permits) it is an additional $10 not refundable. It is voluntary - not MANDITORY - to apply for the dmp's.

For $38 more this year - $88 total - you would have recieved what you did plus 4 turkey tags, freshwater fishing license, and your mz permit with another bow/mz antlerless tag. This is all on the DEC website and in the book you get when you purchase.

Some clerk gave you the wrong info 1st time around.

I am far more concerned with the groups pushing to include guns in the last week of bow season - the best week with the rut.

The last thing I did before I moved out of state was buy a Lifetime license.  With thw way the out of state fees are it paid for itself in 2-3 seasons  

If I were to buy the equivalent of the supersportsmen in CT it would cost me $120 for the license and archery tags, then another $28 for each of the 4 gun tags (state/private land firearm and state/private muzzleloader) then 3 x 28 for each of the turkey tags.  That's $316 for a RESIDENT.  The NY resident cost of $88 seems like a bargain!

OK, So I'm an "old fart" LOL

I remember my first Big Game license cost me $3.25

At a time when NY's economy and budget is in the toilet,and the state is trying to raise every tax and fee possible to try to make up for the government's incompitience. Now is the worst time for this enormous sporting license increase.

The money from the sale of sporting licenses is supposed to go into a seperate "conservation fund" not into NY States "general fund". For years the D.E.C. Commissioners have done a pretty good job of keeping the State's "sticky fingers" out of the conservation fund.Then again,there have been rumors and fears that behind closed doors the state has been "borrowing" from the conservation fund,to supplement the general fund(which is ALWAYS in the red,so there is no possible way that the money can ever be repaid) The N.Y.S.D.E.C. continues to report that they are "loosing money" so they must raise the license fees to compensate so that they can continiue to to fund projects however we the Sportsmen who fund these "projects" see very little for our money. The DEC continiues to close hatcheries and stocks fewer fish each year. They raise fewer and fewer pheasants each year,and only stock a handful of birds for special youth hunts. The DEC "deer check" stations are only open on "opening day" then the trailers set closed and un-maned for the rest of the season.(sometimes untill March or April because they are snowed and plowed in at rest areas) All of this tends to add fuel to the fear that our Sporting License fees are not being used as they should be. Right now,when N.Y. State's budget is in the fiscal toilet,is the worst time for the DEC to raise our license fees.

It only throws more wood on the fire.....

I got my license today and it hurt throwing a hundred on the desk, but as soon as I was outside I forgot all about it and started getting ready for some fall turkey tomorrow! Its cheap compared to golf!

Sorry Chuck, but after 35+ years of hunting in NY I know YOU KNOW these ARE the "Good Ol' Days".... and you aren't gonna get get any more for yer money doing anything else! It's still a bargain and a priviledge we're damn lucky to have!

 Try being a non-resident license went up $40.00 if you buy SS & apply for doe permit !!! It is still a deal !! Have you purchsed Iowa license lately ? Non-Res about $540.00 2 deer and get this : In the middle of application period this year to purchase a point went from $14 & change to about $55.00 IN THE MIDDLE of application period !!!!!!!

I bought the Sportsman and a bow stamp and it was 68 bucks.  I was surprised.  Beats me but it seems to be pretty expensive even to hunt in this state.  keepem sharp

As of October first, life time license fees are up, too.  A DEC officer at this year's NYS Fair (in September) said that they sold more lifetime licenses during the last 3 months than were sold during the last 8 years.  Looks like license revenues will be way down next year if it's true.

Didn't you hear? Governments are steering away from the word "tax". The new terms for governments making us pay up are things like "fee" and "donation", "mandated payment", "administrative costs", "paying your fair share", "collective burden", etc.

Actually your fees are a bargain. I spent $166.00 this year for 7 deer permits, a hunting license and a spring turkey tag. However all our fees go back to a dedicated wildlife fund and not to the general revenue fund. I guess it is easier to pay the price when it goes directly to what it should.

I don't know about everyone else, but as far as I am concerned, it's hard to have any more enjoyment for under $100. This is the price of my Super Sportsman  plus DMP tag. Most of us probably routinely spend the same $$ and get less for it. Pizza and a movie for the family--once? A couple of tickets to a water park in the summer? I do agree that the way the monies are handled by the state is questionable--they ought to be dedicated to wildlife and conservation with accountability.
PS the "welfare Mom with 7 kids" is a really nasty stereotype which mostly isn't true. I do a lot of work with poor people and I can tell you that living on public assistance is not a nice ride.
